Warning: Spoilers for Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero

Unlike the last time Gohan unlocked a new transformation, Goku and Vegeta won’t be accessing the new transformation discovered in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. The events of the movie added two forms to Dragon Ball lore, one of which being a new state accessible to Saiyans. Known as the Beast form, the new transformation was so powerful that it gave Gohan the means to bring down Cell Max.

With its previously introduced forms, Dragon Ball has set a precedent for many of its transformations to be shared among multiple characters. Not too long after becoming the first Super Saiyan, Goku wound up being one of several Super Saiyans in the Dragon Ball universe. Later, Gohan discovered Super Saiyan 2, only for Goku, Vegeta, Cabba, and Caulifla to eventually figure out how to use it as well. Super Saiyan God, Super Saiyan 3, and Super Saiyan Blue are also forms that have been utilized by more than one Dragon Ball hero.

Based on what’s been said about Beast Gohan, the transformation will join a small list of forms exclusive to just one character [via Comic Book]. According to Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama, Gohan’s new form stems from the “beast” that was within him when he was a child, such as the time he became enraged and nearly overwhelmed Raditz. Looking at this comment, the form relates directly to this particular aspect of Gohan’s character, meaning that Goku nor Vegeta should be expected to copy him this time around. Both managed to get his Super Saiyan 2 form, but neither will unlock the Beast transformation in Dragon Ball’s future. From all indications, this ability will remain unique to Gohan, regardless of how far the other characters rise in the trials ahead.

How Strong Is Beast Gohan?

An exchange between Gohan and Piccolo hinted at how their power levels compare to the top two Z-Warriors. When it was established that Goku and Vegeta might have lost to Cell Max in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, there was a sense that Gohan and Piccolo had finally reached their level. Gohan successfully using Special Beam Canon to destroy a villain that Goku and Vegeta might have lost to is indicative of just how strong he really is. It seems that with Beast Gohan, the character has found an answer to Goku’s Ultra Instinct ability.

It's possible that Gohan has finally retaken his position as Dragon Ball’s strongest Z-Warrior. Earlier, it was assumed that even though it’s no secret that Gohan has the potential to be better than Goku and Vegeta, he had lost too much ground to ever catch up. But Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero bringing him up to their level proves that Gohan can still outdo both of them (if he hasn’t already). With the gains he’s making, Goku and Vegeta may be focusing so much on keeping ahead of each other that they won’t notice when Gohan suddenly overtakes both of them.
