Warning: contains spoilers for the latest chapter of Dragon Ball SuperDragon Ball Super's artist Toyotaro finally explained the secrets behind Goku's latest and most powerful transformation: True Ultra Instinct. This new power-up shocked fans by making Goku subvert all previous rules of Ultra Instinct in order to obtain never-seen-before powers. An interview with the series co-creator clarified some mysteries surrounding Goku's brand-new form.

Ultra Instinct is a divine technique that separates the consciousness from the body, allowing it to move and fight independently of thoughts and emotions. Goku achieved this transformation in the fight against Jiren due to pure desperation but has since had trouble mastering it, having a hard time fully repressing his emotions. Goku has been unable to maintain that form for a very long time, due to the extreme toll on his body. In the long and gruesome battle against Gas, a new, improved version of Ultra Instinct made its debut when Goku finally realized that he will never be able to use the same Ultra Instinct the Angels do, which requires complete calm and a tranquil heart. True Ultra Instinct does not have the silver hair of its previous form but goes back to Goku's natural black color. Rather than being calm, in this state the Saiyan warrior makes use of his emotions and turns them into strength, which allows him to finally overpower Gas.

Such a huge difference in the foundations of the technique raised the question if this new form could be called Ultra Instinct at all, even after the official Dragon Ball website confirmed its name. In a recent interview for Weekly Dragon Ball News, shared by Twitter user @DBSChronicles, Toyotaro explains that the black hair is a sign that Goku is showing his true self, and is making Ultra Instinct his own. Rather than moving on its own due to pure instinct, Goku's body is moved by his emotions instead. Also, the more he becomes familiar with the technique, the more he approaches its true form, the one used by Angels such as Whis, who taught Goku Ultra Instinct in the first place.

The incredible power of Angels comes from the fact that they are constantly in a state of Ultra Instinct. Goku, on the other hand, had to transform to achieve that, which put a great strain on his body and came with huge energy consumption. Now that Goku is mastering the technique, by letting his emotions manifest rather than suppress them, it's becoming more and more a natural state for him, something that Toyotaro describes as "Ultra Instinct slowly seeping into his own body". This is the reason why the author felt that Goku's hair had to return to its original color, to underline how Ultra Instinct is slowly becoming a natural state for him.

What is even more interesting is that Goku previously achieved a similar state with his Super Saiyan transformation during the Cell Saga when he was able to maintain the transformation as a "natural" state for the longest period of time, vastly increasing his power. True Ultra Instinct follows the same principle and, if mastered, will put Goku on the same level as the Angels, the most powerful creatures in the Dragon Ball multiverse.
