For a limited time, GOG users can take advantage of a Metro: Last Light Redux giveaway that makes the game available for free in the storefront's ongoing Winter Sale. The sequel to Metro 2033, Last Light originally hit store shelves in the first half of 2013 on consoles and PC. Developer 4A Games remastered the post apocalyptic shooter the following year, launching Metro: Last Light Redux for the then next-gen consoles.

The franchise's third and most recent entry, Metro Exodus, launched in early 2019. However, 4A Games is not yet ready to part ways with the Russia-set adventures it's been crafting for more than a decade. The developer currently has a multiplayer experience based on the Metro universe in the works. And late last month, the studio announced it had plans to develop another Metro sequel. Thus, now seems as good a time as any to jump into the acclaimed first-person shooter series.

From now until January 1, all GOG users can download Metro: Last Light Redux free of charge. The storefront's official Twitter account shared the news this morning, noting that the deal is part of its "Winter Sale Finale." As of writing, the website itself boasts a timer for the Metro: Last Light Redux giveaway, allowing users to track how long they have until the free offering runs its course. Simply put, anyone who has a GOG account would do well to claim the freebie as soon as possible. It's not the only deal in the Winter Sale worth taking advantage of, either. Over 3,500 deals are live on the online store, with discounts that knock down prices by upwards of 91 percent. For instance, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's Game of the Year Edition is available for a mere $15, while Metro Exodus - Gold Edition is priced under $23.

Again, this particular free offering will likely serve as a good way for many to jump into one of gaming's more compelling franchises. Since its debut with Metro 2033 in 2010, the Metro series has provided players with incredible first-person shooter mechanics, an intriguing narrative, and a haunting setting. As such, it'll be interesting to see how 4A Games continues the series, especially when taking the title's ending(s) into consideration.

Plus, 4A Games' growing interest in technological advancements such as ray-tracing means the next Metro project is sure to take visual fidelity to a new level. There's currently no word on when fans will get a first look at the studio's next endeavor, though.
