With the hype mounting for Godzilla vs. Kong, the trailer finally arrived and it delivered in every way possible. From the creatures locking horns to hints at where the series will go next, which is literally out of this world, there are little nuggets of information hiding in almost every frame.

Though there’s still a lot of information about the movie that fans don’t know, there was so much more to the trailer than two monsters simply smacking each other in the face. Between finally learning which of the two is the villain, what fueled their anger, and how it all builds to a much deeper mystery, the trailer was more than revealing.

Mechagodzilla Is In The House

Godzilla vs Kong Mechagodzilla Plans

Being one of Godzilla’s most well-known foes, Mechagodzilla has always been one of the kaiju fans want to see in the MonsterVerse, and it seems like their prayers have been answered. However, it isn’t a complete certainty, as there’s nothing more than a screenshot to go off. About midway into the trailer, Ren is seen in front of a big screen, and though there’s a text box covering what would be the body, there are clearly some mechanical feet just below it that look an awful lot like Godzilla’s. But it could simply be nothing more than an Easter egg, and it’s hard to imagine Mechagodzilla in a movie that’s already jam packed with action.

APEX

The the trailer doesn’t exactly tell fans what APEX is, as it just denotes that something exits under that name and that it is heavily related to Monarch. A map that is seen in the trailer features a number of scrap bits of newspaper and random post-it notes, with many of them referring to APEX. The word could very well be the name of the company that is building Mechagodzilla, or it could just as easily be a code name for another villain yet to be revealed.

Godzilla Is The Villain

Godzilla’s intelligence is one of the things the 1998 version got right, as he (or she, in that version) was able to correctly predict the military’s moves and never once fell in to their traps. But the thing was, Godzilla wasn’t a villain in that movie, and fans would have to dig deep to find material in which the sea monster is a villain.

However, the new trailer for the movie depicts Godzilla as the bad guy, as he is seen attacking Kong and actively destroying cities. Given how smart the creature is and how much destruction he could cause as a villain, it’ll make for something truly epic. It’s quite a switch from the last time audiences saw him protecting the world from Ghidorah, but what turned him that way remains to be seen.

They Have Been At War For Centuries

The reason for their fighting has now become clear thanks to the trailer, as the two monsters are seemingly in the middle of a war that has been on going for centuries. As it is said in the trailer, “there was a war, and they’re the last ones standing.” The ancient titan war has continued through their lines of generations that began with their ancestors, and though that’s all fans know for now, there’s clearly some bad blood.

Kong Is Much Bigger Than He Was In Skull Island

Even before the release of Kong: Skull Island, the ape was much smaller than that before then because he was an adolescent. A good point of reference is how he looked at the top of the Empire State Building, as he actually had to climb it. Now it seems like the gargantuan creature has to bend down to reach that same building. Though Kong’s short height was one of the things to keep in mind, it doesn’t seem like much of a shortcoming anymore, as even in the poster the ape is twice the size of skyscrapers. Now the two titans are much more evenly matched.

Kong’s Axe Weapon

Godzilla vs Kong Axe Atomic Breath Fight Trailer

Even though it was pretty self indulgent and focused more on the human characters than the titular beast, the spectacular action is one of the reasons Peter Jackson’s King Kong is better than the original. But that’s clearly not going to be the consensus after Godzilla vs. Kong comes out, as the action looks out of this world.

That’s in part due to a crafty new weapon that Kong wields, which is a makeshift axe that seemingly soaks up Godzilla’s atomic breath. It does raise several questions however, such as where he got it from and how it works. But it at least now answers the question that was on everybody’s mind; which was why Godzilla can’t just tear Kong apart with his atomic breath.

Kong Connects With Humanity

Kong and a little girl stare at each other in Godzilla vs. Kong

In what is another reference to the famous painting from Michelangelo Buonarroti, which sees Adam touching fingers with God in the Sistine Chapel, Kong and a little girl do the exact same thing. It suggests that the child is somehow connected to the beast, but what her exact role is in the movie is unknown at the minute.

Jia says that the little girl is the only person that Kong will communicate with, and in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, it was hinted that some humans are able to communicate telepathically with the monsters, so it could be what leads the series to telepathy.

Kong Held Captive By The Monarch

Godzilla vs Kong Trailer Chains

After a string of many King Kong movies, there is hardly a single one that doesn’t result in the poor guy getting shackled up in chains; which was one of the reasons why Skull Island was so refreshing.

However, yet again Kong is tied down by Monarch on a giant carrier ship. Though Kong might not be complaining, as apes don’t necessarily fare well in water, and if he wasn’t chained up, Kong would either drown or be torn apart by Godzilla before the fight has even begun. But one thing that isn’t clear is how Monarch even captured him in the first place, which is something the movie will hopefully answer.

Warbat

Godzilla vs Kong Nozuki and Warbat Trailer

The villain is one of the reasons why people like 2014's Godzilla, as the MUTOs were the first time in a big Hollywood movie that Godzilla actually had a formidable enemy. And King of the Monsters had a whole slew of villains, too, but there are so many more exciting foes in Godzilla’s extensive rogues gallery.

As if Kong (and the possibility of Mechagodzilla) wasn’t enough, the movie will also feature Warbats (formerly called Nozuki). Whether they have a horse in the race or they just want a piece of the action themselves isn’t clear, but Warbats can be seen attacking the titular monsters in the movie.

There Are Aliens!

Godzilla vs Kong Trailer UFO Hollow Earth

Godzilla vs. Kong is pulling out all the stops, as not only are there two world famous beasts trying to kill each other, telepathic children, and new monsters, but there are aliens, too. It is all but confirmed, as a UFO can be seen above King Kong in a very brief shot. It could very well be a military aircraft or something along those lines, but it’s unlike any man made aircraft ever seen before. The blue energy emissions coming from the back are unlike anything that would come from a fuel found on earth, and it has led to speculation that whatever the result of the movie is, it’ll lead to Hollow Earth.
