Summary

  • Godzilla vs Kong soundtrack features mostly instrumental scores, with only four main lyrical songs, fitting the thematic undertones of the film.
  • Composed by Junkie XL, the score is used for action sequences while classic songs like Elvis Presley's "Loving Arms" enhance emotional moments.
  • Each song in the soundtrack, like Elvis Presley's "Loving Arms," complements specific scenes, adding depth and emotion to the monster mayhem.

The Godzilla vs Kong soundtrack has only a few songs that aren't instrumental scores, infusing some popular music into the monster mayhem, with some even having thematic undertones. Adam Wingard's Godzilla vs Kong was the build up of the cinematic universe known as the MonsterVerse, with the much anticipated showdown between the two iconic beasts. It also serves as a culmination of what came before, blending the aesthetic feel from Jordan Vogt-Roberts' Kong: Skull Island as well as Gareth Edwards's Godzilla and Michael Dougherty's Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and part of that means the music.

Godzilla vs Kong's score was composed by Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie XL. While the scores for the movie are used for the bombastic action sequences filled with monster destruction, it is accompanied by a handful of songs - some oldies, some country, and one heavy metal. Although it's a two-hour movie, the Godzilla vs Kong soundtrack consists of just four main, lyrical songs - one of which plays in the beginning and another at the end, thus leaving only two to play throughout the crux of the film.

When Every Song On The Godzilla vs Kong Soundtrack Plays In The Movie

All Four Songs Highlight Their Respective Scenes

"Over The Mountain, Across The Sea" by Bobby Vinton - The first scene of the movie following the studio splash pages is Kong waking up "somewhere on Skull Island," which is when the song "Over The Mountain, Across The Sea" plays. Written by Rex Garvin, the song has been famously performed twice by Johnnie & Joe in the 1950s and Bobby Vinton (the version heard in Godzilla vs Kong) in the 1960s.

"Loving Arms" by Elvis Presley - When Monarch begins its journey to Antarctica with Kong shackled aboard one of the ships, Elvis Presley's "Loving Arms" plays. It's an incredible song that ties to Kong's current predicament; he lost his freedom, is far away from home, and is in chains. On top of all that, all Kong wants is to be somewhere he feels comfortable, which, for his entire life, was Skull Island.

"Breaking The Law" by Judas Priest - Although not played when Godzilla or Kong are onscreen, Judas Priest's "Breaking The Law" plays on the radio when Josh Valentine picks up Madison Russell in his brother's van. Funnily enough, the song's title sums up the rest of their story; they break into Apex Cybernetics' facility in Florida and go on a whistleblowing journey.

"The Air That I Breathe" by The Hollies - After Godzilla and Kong go their separate ways, "The Air That I Breathe" plays over the final scene in which Kong goes for his morning stroll in the Hollow Earth, with Jia, Dr. Ilene Andrews, and Dr. Nathan Lind monitor him from their new Monarch facility inside the earth.

Godzilla vs Kong's soundtrack is bare, but it's interesting that, with the exception of one instance, the only time music plays, aside from the score, is when Kong is there. Since Kong: Skull Island took plays in the 1970s and dove heavily into that wartime feel - Credence Clearwater Revival and all - it's only fitting Godzilla vs Kong does the same in its film for that character.
