Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard has confirmed that the movie takes place in the present day. The Godzilla reboot had been in development for several years before Gareth Edwards boarded the project in 2011. The reboot, which starred the likes of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, and Ken Watanabe, ended up releasing in 2014. It garnered generally positive reviews and eventually became a box office success, grossing $529 million globally.
Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures decided to use the Godzilla reboot to launch a shared universe consisting of various iconic monsters from across pop culture, and thus, the MonsterVerse was born. The franchise's second installment released earlier this year and it acted as a launch pad for the burgeoning MonsterVerse: Jordan Vogt-Roberts' Kong: Skull Island, a King Kong reboot that took place over 40 years prior to the events of Edwards' Godzilla film. A year after first announcing plans to develop the Kong reboot, Warner Bros. revealed intentions to pit both iconic monsters together for an ultimate showdown in Godzilla vs. Kong. Although little has been known about the project, certain details are starting to trickle out.

Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard has been busy promoting his latest film, Death Note, and in an interview with /Film, he mentioned that his upcoming MonsterVerse movie will take place in the present day and even feature characters from Michael Dougherty's upcoming Godzilla sequel, Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
"No, ours is more in continuity with the sequel to Godzilla right now. They’re doing Godzilla 2 with Mike Dougherty directing, so our film is in [the] present day. We have a couple characters from Godzilla 2 in ours, but it’ll be interesting to see how Kong has fared over the years. You see him in that film and he’s just constantly under attack. Things are going wrong and there’s probably been lots of human intervention since then. It’ll be interesting to see a more rugged, a bit more aged Kong in this film."
From the get-go, people have wondered when the Godzilla vs. Kong movie would take place, since the Kong reboot was set in the '70s whereas the Godzilla reboot took place in the present day. Seeing how John C. Reilly's character in Kong: Skull Island mentioned that Kong was young and still growing, it makes sense that he would need to be older and much more experienced fighting other monsters before he faced off with Godzilla, the King of the Monsters.
Of course, aside from character and plot details, the thing many people would want to know is, who will win the fight? Wingard recently said that they will avoid recent brawl grievances and crown and an actual winner, but it's a matter of who will win. Kong stands at 100 feet tall in Vogt-Roberts' reboot, whereas Godzilla towers at over 355 feet tall in his reboot. It'll certainly be interesting to see how much taller (and older) Kong will be when Godzilla vs. Kong hits theaters in 2020.
