Godzilla vs. Kong has been given the Certified Fresh badge on Rotten Tomatoes. The highly anticipated MonsterVerse bout released domestically this week. To say the film is doing well would be an understatement. Social media reaction is positive across the board, and it is the first film in the MonsterVerse to receive an A on Cinemascore. Financially, the film is stomping right to the bank. Domestically, it has the highest opening day box office haul from a Hollywood film since March, 2020.

It's interesting looking back on the reception for each individual MonsterVerse film. Reviews praised the production values of 2014's Godzilla, giving credit for successfully adapting the character. Reviews were in stark contrast to Hollywood's first attempt to adapt Godzilla in 1998. Kong: Skull Island was also received well, with reviews praising the entertaining monster scenes. Godzilla: King of the Monsters was the first MonsterVerse film to receive a rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes. Although reviews praised the visual effects, many were not fans of the action almost always taking place in dark, stormy weather. The human characters were criticized. Godzilla vs. Kong has brought things back to a positive light as one of 2021's most notable films so far.

Interestingly, Godzilla vs. Kong's common criticism is similar to Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and that's a lack of quality human characters. The difference is Godzilla vs. Kong spends more time with the monsters in satisfying action. It also helps the fights take place in either broad daylight, or a neon-lit city. For many viewers, director Adam Wingard delivered a slugfest so good, it makes up for the underdeveloped characters.

With Godzilla vs. Kong doing well, many are hoping Legendary announces future plans for the MonsterVerse. Kong is getting a MonsterVerse animated show on Netflix, but no more films for either creature are confirmed. After Godzilla: King of the Monsters' disappointing box office, the future may have appeared bleak. But, Godzilla vs. Kong has impressed at the box office, drawing over $130 million worldwide in a box office that had been affected by the pandemic. Godzilla vs. Kong could herald not just more in the MonsterVerse, but a return to normalcy for the film industry.
