Rodan could have a secret role in Godzilla vs. Kong. Nicknamed the “Fire Demon” in the MonsterVerse, the flying Titan was an ally to Ghidorah in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but could be on the side of Godzilla when he makes his next big-screen appearance.

Rodan, who has a history of being a partner to Godzilla in Toho’s movies, acted as a minion to Ghidorah through most of King of the Monsters. He changed allegiances after witnessing Godzilla’s victory over his master. King of the Monsters ended with Rodan, Behemoth, Methuselah, Scylla, and the third MUTO all bowing down to their new alpha. But despite the fact that all five survived the movie and are now allied with Godzilla, none were seen in the Godzilla vs. Kong trailer. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t in the movie at all. Rodan, who is specifically important in Godzilla lore, could make a return in Godzilla vs. Kong.

Since the King of the Monsters credits revealed that Rodan has found a new volcano to roost in, it’s at least possible that he won’t be around in Godzilla vs. Kong; however, Godzilla could call him out of hibernation to help with a new problem in the sequel. Though he wasn’t in the trailer, his role (and that of the other original MonsterVerse Titans) may have been teased by the map with all writing on it at the 1:47 mark. Notes on the map plot Godzilla’s attacks on humans and the locations of APEX facilities that have been destroyed. The map doesn’t say who’s leveling these places, but since there are separate notes for Godzilla’s activities, that would suggest they’re related to a different Titan.

It would make a lot of sense if the Titan that’s targeting the APEX facilities is Rodan, who may very well be operating as Godzilla’s chief minion in the MonsterVerse. First of all, there’s a strong chance that APEX is the movie’s villain group. They could be the ones who are planning to kill all of the Titans. If they really are building weapons like Mechagodzilla that are capable of pulling this off, Godzilla could have sent Rodan to take care of them. This would explain why “Connection between Godzilla and APEX?” was written on the wall. The human characters may believe that Godzilla has something to do with the destruction of their facilities, but may not be clear on what his role actually is. There being some mystery behind that would seem perfectly plausible if Titans other than Godzilla – like Rodan – were involved.

In addition to that, it stands to reason that Godzilla would make use of his newfound resources as the alpha, especially if he’s up against a major threat in Godzilla vs. Kong. With an untold number of Titans now serving him, Godzilla would be wasting them if he didn’t send them into action. Plus, it would feel fitting if he chose to have Rodan do most of the heavy lifting. After all, Rodan is arguably Godzilla’s best ally in Toho’s movies, and it would be a huge missed opportunity if they didn’t team-up at some point in the MonsterVerse.
