Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard is in talks to direct the next MonsterVerse movie. Legendary's monster franchise began back in 2014 with Godzilla and the success of Gareth Edwards' movie brought hope that there could be many other adventures set in this universe. Kong got a standalone prequel in 2017 with Kong: Skull Island, while Gojira received a sequel solo movie with 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters. All of this was done to build towards Godzilla vs. Kong and hopefully launch even more movies.

To the surprise of some, Godzilla vs. Kong has been one of the biggest movie success stories of 2021. The film, which was delayed multiple times, received mostly positive reviews from critics and general audiences have responded kindly as well. It is sure to cross $400 million at the global box office, making it the second-highest-grossing MonsterVerse entry to date. However, many have remained curious if the franchise would continue or if Godzilla vs. Kong would be the end to this short-lived saga. For fans of the franchise, thankfully it appears to be the former.

According to a new report from THR, Legendary is in early talks with Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard to return for a future MonsterVerse film. The deal is reportedly not closed, as Wingard has several other projects in his future, and that means there is no timetable for the potential MonsterVerse entry. No writer is attached to the new movie and plot details are scarce. The report does note that one potential title being considered is Son of Kong.

Even with limited details on the project itself, this is a big moment for the MonsterVerse itself. It was very possible that Godzilla vs. Kong served as the ending to the franchise if the movie didn't perform well. Once it started performing well at the box office and getting good reviews, fans were hopeful that more movies would come. Yet, many grew nervous as more time passed since the film's release without any word on what the future holds. Fans can now potentially breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Legendary is at least interested in continuing the MonsterVerse. This specific project with Wingard could fall through still, but it would appear the MonsterVerse will go on.

The rumblings of Wingard's next MonsterVerse movie being titled Son of Kong are quite intriguing too. The original Son of Kong was released in 1933 and told the story of Kong discovering the existence of a child. This would go against a lot of what the MonsterVerse has established so far though. Kong is believed to be the last of his kind and lived alone on Skull Island. Now that Kong is in Hollow Earth, though, perhaps another giant ape survived down there that can father his child. Future details on the Godzilla vs. Kong follow-up will need to confirm this information to be true. But, Wingard wanting to tell more of Kong's story makes sense considering how well he handled the character last time.
