It could be that the “Godzilla” in the new Godzilla vs. Kong trailer is actually Mechagodzilla in disguise. In the highly anticipated trailer, Kong is once again painted as a sympathetic and heroic figure, while Godzilla is looking like the antagonist who instigates the conflict.

For a long time, fans have known little about the long-delayed, fourth installment in the MonsterVerse. Now that the trailer has finally released, what the movie has in store for audiences is becoming a bit more clear. It would seem that after being captured for a mysterious purpose, Kong will be hunted down and attacked by Godzilla, who appears to be an ancient rival of his species. This possibility was hinted at as far back as 2015’s Kong: Skull Island, when a post-credits scene showed a cave painting of the two monsters clashing. It appeared again in the credits sequence of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, a movie that further teased their upcoming showdown.

Though their battle will be the focus of the film, they won’t be the only Titans involved in the action. It remains to be seen if Rodan and King of the Monsters’ original Titans will be returning in the movie, but at least two giant creatures will be taking part in the fighting. Two winged, snake-like Titans were spotted fighting Kong in the trailer. A third new Titan will be around as well, as the inclusion of Mechagodzilla has already been spoiled. In fact, he may have even had a much bigger presence in the trailer than viewers may be aware. Here’s why Godzilla’s robotic counterpart may be disguised as the real thing in Godzilla vs Kong.

Mechagodzilla Is In Godzilla vs. Kong

In January 2020, leaked images of a Mechagodzilla action figure in a Godzilla vs. Kong toyline were released. The figure featured a brand-new design for the monster, who is Godzilla’s second biggest enemy in Toho’s movies. The images revealed that Mechagodzilla was hiding somewhere in the movie. As surprising as this was, the Titan’s introduction happening in Godzilla vs. Kong is something that the MonsterVerse had already foreshadowed. In King of the Monsters’ credits, it was stated that a “mechanized giant” was being built on Skull Island. With Mechagodzilla being Toho’s most well-known giant robot, it was believed that this line was intended to be a Mechagodzilla Easter egg. However, it looks like the meaning behind this reference goes much deeper than that.

Legendary has yet to give any official word on his inclusion, but there was a hint of him in the trailer. At the 1:42 mark, a screen behind Shun Oguri’s character shows the blueprint of a mechanized monster with a Godzilla-like body. He wasn’t mentioned at all in the trailer, so for the time being, his purpose in Godzilla vs. Kong will remain a mystery.

Godzilla Isn't A Villain In The MonsterVerse

Mechagodzilla’s role in Godzilla vs. Kong could be linked to the alpha’s odd behavior in the trailer. In one scene, Mark (Kyle Chandler) says “Godzilla is out there and he’s hurting people, and we don’t know why”. Plus, he destroys an aircraft carrier in pursuit of Kong. He can also be seen blasting humans with his atomic breath. A shot that shows a map with notes on it confirms that Godzilla has made multiple attacks on humans since the events of King of the Monsters. This sudden aggressiveness is uncharacteristic of the MonsterVerse’s Godzilla. It wouldn’t be strange for Toho’s version to be at odds with humans, but Godzilla has thus far maintained a much different, more heroic image. In both Godzilla and King of the Monsters, the Titan has fought to preserve the balance of nature and has actually protected the humans from harm. Also, the King of the Monsters credits did mention that Godzilla is keeping his Titan minions from attacking cities. These things make the way Godzilla is acting seem highly unusual. Given what is known about him, there must be a good explanation for what’s happening. One possible reason is that Godzilla’s attacks are directed at the villains, while another would be that the monster creating all this chaos isn’t Godzilla at all.

Mechagodzilla Could Be Disguised As Godzilla

It could be that Mechagodzilla is masquerading as the King of the Monsters. This wouldn’t be unprecedented in a Godzilla movie, nor would it be impossible. First of all, Mechagodzilla has done this before. In his first movie, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, “Godzilla” attacked his ally, Anguirus, and went on a rampage in Japan until it was discovered that he was an imposter in disguise. His true form was fully exposed after being bombarded with Godzilla’s atomic breath. This plotline could very well be repeated in Godzilla vs. Kong, with the human villains using Mechagodzilla to accomplish their goals. In the trailer, a note read, “Connection between Godzilla & APEX?” This provides evidence that APEX (which may be the name of the villainous organization in the film) is behind Godzilla’s actions. It was said in the synopsis that there’s a conspiracy in place that would see all the Titans wiped out of existence. This could be what they’re using Mechagodzilla for. If they somehow have access to Monarch’s technology and resources, they could have created their own mechanized giant and made him appear as Godzilla. Doing so would be beneficial to their cause because it would reinforce human fears of Godzilla and the Titans, and perpetrate more actions against him from the United States and other nations.

What The Real Godzilla Could Be Doing

Godzilla 2014

If this is true, then essentially what it would mean is that the villains are framing Godzilla. If so, the humans and Kong could end up uniting to take him down, believing that he’s a common enemy. This could be a part of a bigger plan to get rid of the two strongest Titans in the MonsterVerse. It’s possible that if Kong battles the disguised Mechagodzilla first, he may later go after the real Godzilla, believing that the two are one and the same. A case of mistaken identity could be what really starts their fight. The two being ancestral rivals would only fuel their grudge against each other.

If Mechagodzilla makes Godzilla an enemy of the planet, he could have adversaries on all sides. How he’ll respond to these threats may have been teased in the trailer. Some of the notes on the map confirmed that two different types of Titan-related incidents are occurring all over the planet. One is seemingly random Godzilla attacks, while the other is APEX facilities being destroyed. The first could be the work of Mechagodzilla, whereas the second could be Godzilla retaliating against the villains. He may be looking for his imposter and laying waste to the bases run by the people trying to kill the Titans. What may complicate his quest is Kong, who could thrust himself into the middle of his crusade against the movie’s true antagonists. If Mechagodzilla is the one who’s causing all this trouble, hopefully Kong will uncover the truth in Godzilla Vs. Kong, and make an alliance with Godzilla before it’s too late.
