Godzilla vs. Kong’s mysterious mecha-titan is confirmed to be tied to King Ghidorah’s severed head, suggesting that a new version of Mecha-Ghidorah is entering the MonsterVerse. The film’s trailers have hinted at a cybernetic kaiju of some sort entering the fray, which many fans believed to be Mechagodzilla. However, it seems that a different robotic monster from the Toho canon is making its way to Godzilla vs. Kong.
With no new MonsterVerse films announced after Godzilla vs. Kong, many have wondered what the next primary foe or storyline will be. The hints of a mecha-titan of some sort, tied to Godzilla vs. Kong’s mysterious APEX group, have produced one of the more popular fan theories – that Mechagodzilla will enter the fray as the next significant threat. That could still happen, but a new report has confirmed a new robo-kaiju connected to a different MonsterVerse veteran.
Reporting from an official set visit to the production of Godzilla vs. Kong, Collider has confirmed the existence of a mecha-titan with King Ghidorah’s head. “We walked on to the set, and there was a gigantic Ghidorah skull that had been wired up and made technological,” collider’s Matt Goldberg wrote. “It’s one of the cooler sets I’ve been on as it looks like they had taken the organic matter of Ghidorah and mechanized it into some new kind of mechanized creature.” For fans of Toho’s back catalog of Godzilla films, that reveal points in one direction – the theatrical return of Mecha-King Ghidorah.
What role the new Mecha-Ghidorah will play in Godzilla vs. Kong remains to be seen. Collider’s visit confirmed theories that Apex will be a villainous presence in the MonsterVerse, and their apparent technological capabilities make them the most likely candidates for creating a giant cyborg monster. That suggests that Godzilla: King of the Monsters villain Alan Jonah is likely working with Apex behind the scenes, as he acquired Ghidorah's head at the end of King of the Monsters. He might even be involved in Godzilla’s sudden violent rampage.
What does Mecha-Ghidorah’s inclusion mean for Mechagodzilla’s chances of showing up? The latter kaiju could indeed still appear, and fans have even theorized that the Godzilla seen in the trailer footage is Mechagodzilla in disguise. A proper fight between Godzilla and Kong has been promised, so that certainly isn’t a guarantee, but it does leave a lot of potential on the table. A two-on-two battle of Godzilla and Kong vs. Mechagodzilla and Mecha-King Ghidorah is a longshot, but it’s not out of the question. At the very least, MonsterVerse fans can look forward to a new version of Mecha-Ghidorah when Godzilla vs. Kong releases in theaters and on HBO Max on March 31.
