Godzilla vs. Kong continues the MonsterVerse franchise, but it ignores key details from Godzilla: King of the Monsters that were thought to set up the Titan fight film. The release of Godzilla vs. Kong finally allowed the monster franchise a chance to pit its two biggest creatures against each other. Godzilla and Kong's duel comes after two solo films for Gojira and one for the giant ape, with Godzilla: King of the Monsters positioned as the lead-in movie to the crossover.

The ending of Godzilla: King of the Monsters set up a few aspects of Godzilla vs. Kong's story. Godzilla is the clear Alpha Titan and Monarch is continuing its quest to explore the Hollow Earth. This leads them to recruit Kong as their guide to the new world and potentially give him a new home away from Godzilla. Godzilla vs. Kong even paid off the last film's tease that King Ghidorah's severed head could be used for evil intentions, with Apex harnessing it to create and control Mechagodzilla. Despite how well the movie builds on Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the latest MonsterVerse entry ignored some key teases.

Arguably the most notable tease that Godzilla vs. Kong forgot about is more Titans going to Skull Island. The Godzilla: King of the Monster's credits showed a news headline that read, "New Titans Are Drawn To Skull Island." This led many to believe some new Titans would be featured in Godzilla vs. Kong, but that isn't the case. There is nothing in the movie to suggest that any other Titans are on Skull Island with Kong. The ape is locked in a containment unit by Monarch on Skull Island, which kept a look at Skull Island to a minimum. It is possible that the other Titans who traveled to the island are also in containment units, but there is no way of knowing. This leaves a giant tease unresolved in regard to what these new Titans are, why they were drawn to Skull Island, and if they made it there at all.

Godzilla vs. Kong also ignored the setup for Monarch to build a mechanized giant. This tease also came near the end of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Monarch was said to be developing the weapon on Skull Island. However, Monarch has no involvement in the creation of a mechanized giant in the movie. Instead, Apex received this storyline for reasons unknown. Apex isn't affiliated with Monarch, and the change is admittedly somewhat odd. Godzilla vs. Kong could've kept the story simpler by having Monarch be behind Mechagodzilla's creation instead of introducing a completely different organization.

There are other smaller teases from Godzilla: King of the Monsters - like Mothra potentially laying another egg - that Godzilla vs. Kong doesn't acknowledge. These changes to the direction of the MonsterVerse could be the result of the franchise not having an overall vision for where it is going. Each MonsterVerse film has had different directors and writers, and while that can help the movies have unique styles and visions, it can also result in some details slipping through the cracks. Then again, future MonsterVerse movies could pick up these threads, as long as Godzilla vs. Kong isn't the last installment in the franchise.
