There are clues in the MonsterVerse pertaining to who won the original Titan War thousands of years before Godzilla vs. Kong. The movie establishes the ancestors of the two titular Titans were engaged in an ancient conflict, but the movie didn’t say who came out on top.

According to Rebecca Hall’s Dr. Ilene Andrews, the tribe who lived on Skull Island told stories about a battle between Godzilla and Kong’s species, which helps to explain why the King of the Monsters was so intent on beating him. It also makes sense of the cave paintings of the two creatures fighting in both Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Before long, the two found themselves renewing their ancestors’ rivalry. In the end, Godzilla triumphed over Kong and successfully cemented his status as alpha of the MonsterVerse’s Titans.

There’s no question on who won the fight in Godzilla vs. Kong, but what’s a bit less clear is who prevailed when their ancestors clashed all those centuries ago. However, the backstory established for Kong’s species in Godzilla vs. Kong suggests it was Gojira who emerged victorious in the first Titan War. Just as Dr. Andrews had speculated, it was confirmed in the movie Kong’s kind did not originate on Skull Island. Instead, they populated the Hollow Earth world first. At an unspecified time in their history, they entered the tunnels and relocated to Skull Island on the surface. Kong’s ancestors leaving their home could be an indication they were forced out.

Kong in Hollow Earth

Kong’s species occupied an enormous throne room and had a whole world down there to rule, which opens up questions about why they would abandon it for a comparably smaller island. It stands to reason Godzilla and his own ancestors are actually to blame. It could be that if Godzilla’s side won the conflict, the consequence for Kong’s race is they lost the Hollow Earth. The presence of what the Godzilla vs. Kong novelization has confirmed to be a Godzilla skeleton points toward there being a big fight happening in the throne room. They may have taken down at least one Godzilla, but his kind could have won the over-arching battle.

Of course, Godzilla winning doesn’t mean his side didn’t suffer severe consequences from the battle. It was mentioned in Godzilla vs. Kong prequel graphic novel Godzilla: Dominion that long ago, Godzilla was driven out of one of his former homes by one of Kong’s ancestors. Plus, his race may be partially responsible for why Godzilla is the last of his kind. The MUTOs may take the credit for most of their deaths, but the casualties they sustained in the Titan War could have made their extinction possible. Regardless, an entire community of apes feeling for a small island on the surface provides strong evidence despite Godzilla’s losses, his side ultimately claimed victory in the original Titan War.
