Godzilla vs. Kong’s Hollow Earth monster may have had a hidden presence in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. In the fourth MonsterVerse movie, Kong’s arrival in the land of his ancestors was followed by an ambush from two giant, winged serpents known as Warbats. Though he handily beat them both in brutal fashion, it may not have been the first time audiences were introduced to the monsters.

First revealed by merchandise for the film, the nature of the Warbats and where they fit into the story was one of Godzilla vs. Kong’s many mysteries. In the trailer, Kong was briefly shown using one as a weapon against the other at a then-unknown location. When the movie released, it was established that the Warbats, who were never named in the movie itself, were inhabitants of the MonsterVerse’s Hollow Earth world. With a little help from the humans, Kong was able to kill both of the creatures.

It’s possible that an additional Warbat was hiding in the previous movie, Godzilla: King of the Monsters. When Ghidorah let out his call, over a dozen Titans were unleashed on the Earth, but only a handful of them were actually shown on-screen. Monitor screens at Monarch revealed the names of 11 more that had left their resting places to do the bidding of the alpha. One of these Titans, who had been hibernating at Machu Picchu in Peru, has been designated by Monarch as the "Quetzalcoatl" Titan. It was never made abundantly clear why Monarch gave him the name of the god from Aztec mythology, but how he’s described in those stories could provide the reason. The Aztecs traditionally depicted Quetzalcoatl as a feathered serpent, which draws close comparisons to Godzilla vs. Kong’s Warbat.

Godzilla vs Kong Nozuki and Warbat Trailer

If the MonsterVerse’s Quetzalcoatl is the “god” that the Aztecs worshipped all those centuries ago, then it seems quite plausible that he might be a flying serpent monster, or in other words, a Warbat. At some point in the distant past, a Warbat may have left the Hollow Earth, possibly because he was chased out by Kong’s MonsterVerse ancestors, and found a home for himself in Peru. Those native to the region may have named him “Quetzalcoatl” and treated him like a god, just as the people of King of the Monsters’ underwater city did with Godzilla. Later on, he began a slumber underneath Machu Picchu.

The MonsterVerse hasn’t officially unveiled Quetzalcoatl yet, so for now, his true identity will remain a mystery. However, he could always make an appearance at a later date.  Since the focus of Godzilla vs. Kong was a battle between just two Titans, there really wasn’t much room for Godzilla’s Titan minions. But the situation might be different if a Godzilla 3 should happen, which could force the King of the Monsters to call the Titans out of hibernation for help. If that happens, the MonsterVerse could confirm the Quetzalcoatl connection and send a Warbat into battle with him. It would certainly be an interesting way to reuse one of the MonsterVerse’s most unique and menacing creature designs.
