A Godzilla vs Kong fan edit turns the kaiju movie into a dance battle. The highly anticipated reimagined face-off between the two monstrous legends is reaching a fever pitch. The first time they went toe-to-toe was back in King Kong vs. Godzilla, released in Japan in 1962. Despite a somewhat ambiguous ending with the two titans falling in the water, King Kong emerges and is officially declared the winner by Toho Studios, the film production unit behind the big-screen showdown.
Since their 1960s squabble, both Godzilla and King Kong have found new life with rejuvenated Hollywood adaptations in their own respective franchises. Kong was reintroduced via Peter Jackson’s King Kong in 2005 with Naomi Watts (The Ring), Jack Black (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), and Adrien Brody (Peaky Blinders), and 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, featuring Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Samuel L. Jackson (Avengers: Edgame) and Brie Larson (Captain Marvel). Godzilla’s resurgence came by way of Gareth Edwards’s 2014 Godzilla starring Elizabeth Olsen (WandaVision), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), and Ken Watanabe (Inception). The most recent film, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, directed by Michael Dougherty and starring Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel) and Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) in 2019, set the stage for the cataclysmic kaiju rematch nearly 60 years in the making.
Instagrammer Crumble_Memes shared a glimpse at what a more light-hearted battle between Kong and Godzilla might look like. Set to the music of Phil Collins’s 1981 pop hit “In the Air Tonight,” Kong welcomes Godzilla arriving on shore with some infectious drumming, to which the King of Monsters can’t help but bust out some funky dance moves in response. Alexander Skarsgård, who stars in Godzilla vs. Kong, is left completely perplexed by what he is witnessing. You can watch the clip below:
This isn't the first time the kaiju monarch has shaken his tail. In the classic Invasion of the Astro Monster in 1965, Godzilla debuts an adorable jumping victory dance on-screen for the first time. Fast-forwarding to 2015, a comedic Godzilla dancing meme goes viral on YouTube utilizing his likeness from his 2014 film. The clip was parodied and re-edited into many different iterations over the years, reinforcing the idea to Godzilla fans that the beast is indeed a "dancing machine."
Godzilla vs Kong is directed by Adam Wingard and also stars Brian Tyree Henry (If Beale Street Could Talk), Rebecca Hall (Holmes & Watson), and a returning Millie Bobby Brown. From the official trailers already released, it’s likely that the reported 18-minute-long throwdown between the two giants will be much more serious in tone. With Kong triumphant in their inaugural bout, it’s possible the reboot will want to go a different route and see Godzilla come out on top. However, early footage also positions Kong as the film protagonist, leaving Godzilla as the villain to be vanquished, and the atomic lizard’s chance for victory not very good. Nevertheless, the destined winner for their ultimate collision ("dance" or otherwise) is still anyone’s guess, to be settled when Godzilla vs Kong is released in theaters and on HBO Max on March 25th, 2021.
