Julian Dennison, who played Firefist in Deadpool 2, has joined the cast of Legendary Pictures' Godzilla vs. Kong. The shared universe concept may be on thin ice, but Legendary and Warner Bros. are still going ahead with the MonsterVerse, which started with Gareth Edwards' Godzilla in 2014. Jordan Vogt-Roberts' Kong: Skull Island kicked things into high gear in 2017 when it introduced Kong into the universe, while also teasing the arrival of classic monsters such as King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan.
Those three memorable Toho monsters are due to make their first full appearance in 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters, directed by Michael Dougherty (Krampus) and starring Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, and Sally Hawkins, among others. After that, the MonsterVerse will turn its attention to the ultimate showdown film between the shared universe's titular monsters in 2020's Godzilla vs. Kong, which is being directed by Death Note helmer, Adam Wingard. Although not much is known about the movie at this time, it seems casting is starting to get underway.
That Hasthtag Show reports that Godzilla vs. Kong has added Deadpool 2's breakout star Julian Dennison to its cast, who played the mutant Firefist in the blockbuster sequel last month. He has reportedly signed on to star in a supporting (human) role. Update: THR confirms Julian Dennison's casting in Godzilla vs. Kong.
Julian Dennison be joined by Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, and possibly other Godzilla: King of the Monsters stars. The outlet also reports that Legendary Pictures has put out an offer to two-time Oscar-winner Frances McDormand to join the cast. This is not a terribly huge stretch as McDormand's resume does include some big-budget studio fare, including the role of Mearing in Transformers: Dark of the Moon.
He may not have the vast experience or the trophies that Frances McDormand possesses, but Julian Dennison nonetheless has made a big impression in his brief career. Before Deadpool 2, Dennison gave a memorable performance as Ricky in Taika Waititi's quirky movie Hunt for the Wilderpeople. There's no question, though, that his appearance as Russell/Firefist in Deadpool 2 is the thing most people will know him for. The comic book film starring Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, and Zazie Beetz opened to a whopping $125 million in its first weekend and has gone on to gross over $230 million domestically and $530 million worldwide (so far).
Now that the casting process appears to be underway, audiences should find out more about Godzilla vs. Kong in the near future, perhaps around Comic-Con International next month, especially since the movie is expected to start filming this October.
