Kong is wielding an axe in the Godzilla vs. Kong trailer that has a certain power. After a long wait, Legendary has finally released the highly-anticipated trailer for the fourth installment in the MonsterVerse. The footage shows the King of the Monsters and the King of Skull Island coming to blows in multiple heated confrontations.

Over 50 years have passed since the American and Japanese pop culture icons clashed in 1962’s King Kong vs. Godzilla. Then, Kong was the hero the people of Japan depended on to fight off Godzilla. For their next battle, the Godzilla vs. Kong trailer is suggesting that the two will once again be filling the same roles from their original fight. Godzilla is being painted as a threat to the world, and it could be that this is part of why he’ll be on a collision course with Kong, who won't be going into this fight unarmed.

Several moments in the Godzilla vs. Kong trailer show Kong carrying an axe. The trailer doesn’t show how he comes to be in possession of such a weapon, but since Kong does have a history of being a tool-user, it seems likely that he fashioned it himself. As for what its made with, certain looks at the axe - such as the one shown at the 2:03 mark - give the impression that it could have been constructed from Godzilla’s back spikes. The shape does make it look like Kong tore them out of his back and used them to create a deadly weapon. Given Kong’s brutality, attempting to pull out or break off some of Godzilla’s spikes does feel like something he might attempt.

The end of the Godzilla vs. Kong trailer, where the two charge at each other, reveals that Kong can use the axe to catch and block Godzilla’s atomic breath. Not only is that impressive, but it could be a big boost to Kong’s chances at winning. After all, the atomic breath is Godzilla’s greatest weapon, and one that Kong struggled against in the original film. Blocking it could be the key to surviving. However, it’s not clear as of yet how it’s capable of doing that, or why it was glowing blue before Godzilla even blasted it. For now, this aspect of the axe will remain a mystery.

Regardless of where the axe comes from, it does appear that it’s Kong’s best chance at overcoming Godzilla and taking the title of alpha for himself. Kong may need it, especially since hurting Godzilla with just his fists may not be enough to bring him down. With the axe though, he could penetrate his opponent's thick hide and do some serious damage. Godzilla has experienced setbacks in the past when facing enemies who use wielded weapons, so if this problem is repeated in Godzilla vs Kong, it may be necessary for him to find a way to keep the axe out of Kong's hands. Otherwise, the mantle of King of the Monsters may be at risk.
