A Godzilla vs. Kong tie-in comic goes into more detail about why MonsterVerse Titans were interested in fighting Kong. Apparently, Godzilla wasn’t the only monster interested in beating the giant gorilla. Godzilla: King of the Monsters teased in the credits that some of the Titans were on their way to Skull Island, and it would seem that their reason for heading there was to take on its king.

Much of Godzilla vs. Kong’s story revolved around APEX’s villainous intentions for the elusive energy source hidden deep in the Hollow Earth, but the problem facing “Team Kong” in the story was more about Godzilla than it was about APEX’s Mechagodzilla plan. Considering that they had no knowledge of what APEX was really up to, their biggest concern, for the most part, was Godzilla’s relentless pursuit of Kong. The fact that Godzilla wanted to fight him made Dr. Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall) hesitant to let Kong leave Skull Island but, eventually, she agreed to take the risk. As a result, Kong was targeted twice by the King of the Monsters.

As explained by Dr. Andrews, Godzilla hunted Kong because the two are engaged in an ancient rivalry that dates back to their ancestors, but their feud was about more than just their shared history. Apparently, Kong was regarded by the Titans as a fearsome monster. Dr. Andrews explained in the Godzilla vs. Kong prequel comic, Kingdom Kong, that “Kong’s status as an apex predator makes him a target for other Titans”. She came to this conclusion after Kong got into an intense fight with a monster called Camazotz. According to Dr. Andrews, Camazotz wasn’t considered an alpha, but he’d have earned that reputation if he had beaten Kong.

This idea that Kong was attacked because of how powerful he was is reinforced by comments made by Dr. Andrews in Godzilla vs Kong. She claimed that there couldn’t be two alphas. It appears that Godzilla viewed Kong as a threat and that he believed he needed to defeat Kong in order to prove to his opponent that he – and not Kong – was the true alpha of the MonsterVerse. He needed to make sure Kong understood his place in the Titan chain.

As for the other Titans, they may not have been alphas, but they could have become rivals to Godzilla if they proved themselves in battle against Kong, and that’s what Dr. Andrews’ hypothesis in Kingdom Kong points to. Godzilla vs. Kong didn’t address this but, as previously noted, it’s been confirmed that an unknown number of Titans had set their sights on Skull Island after King of the Monsters. If they intended to become alphas, it would make sense for them to do what Camazotz did and attack Kong. For this reason, Kong may have other Titan challengers seek him out in the Hollow Earth in the aftermath of Godzilla vs Kong.
