Godzilla vs. Kong dives deep into the history of the Hollow Earth, but it also teases more titans coming to the MonsterVerse from somewhere else – outer space. The existence of alien life has been confirmed in the MonsterVerse since Ghidorah first appeared in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but so far no other extraterrestrials have made themselves known. However, a few details in Godzilla vs. Kong indicate that could be changing in the future.

Throughout its history, the Toho Godzilla franchise has frequently dealt with alien invaders. Some of the series’ most iconic kaiju, including Ghidorah, Gigan and several iterations of Mechagodzilla, all hailed from the stars, ultimately coming to Earth for showdowns with the king of the monsters. The MonsterVerse has dabbled in that realm previously by keeping Ghidorah an alien, but it’s shied away from the scale of alien storylines seen in the Toho films.

As the future of the MonsterVerse remains in question, Godzilla vs. Kong has dropped a tease that more aliens could be coming in the future. At the end of the film, after Madison Russell (Millie Bobby Brown) introduces Bernie (Brian Tyree Henry) to her father (Kyle Chandler), Bernie immediately begins asking him questions about Monarch, including about a facility the organization may have in Roswell, New Mexico. This reference to one of America’s most famous UFO incidents is obviously meant as a joke at Bernie’s penchant for conspiracy theories, but it also leaves the door open for the MonsterVerse to introduce more alien threats going forward.

The one-off Roswell joke isn’t the only hint at extraterrestrial life in Godzilla vs. Kong either. The cybernetic resurrection of Ghidorah through Mechagodzilla shows that the dragon’s heads can be maintained and resuscitate long after being decapitated. Ghidorah has shown telepathic abilities before, in addition to the ability to command other titans from great distances. Could the beast’s third head – unseen in Godzilla vs. Kong – possibly reach out to others of its kind?

Obviously, because the MonsterVerse is popcorn sci-fi at its core, anything is possible. Bernie doesn’t need to have mentioned Roswell for the franchise to introduce more aliens in future entries. But, with no more films announced at the time of Godzilla vs. Kong’s release, space does seem like one of the most promising places the story could go. There are lots of beloved extraterrestrial kaiju who would be fun to see brought back to the big screen, and there’s plenty of precedent for Godzilla stories to deal in alien threats. After Godzilla vs. Kong, it should be exciting to see where the series goes next.
