Rumors of Godzilla vs. Kong 2 being in development raise the possibility of a MonsterVerse rematch between the two Titans. The last movie offered a definitive answer to the old debate over which monster would win. But since both Titans are still alive, the door is open for the two alpha Titans to trade blows once more.

Reportedly, a Godzilla vs. Kong sequel will film in Australia sometime this year. The idea that the movie is being called a sequel – as opposed to Godzilla 3 or Kong 2 – has generated speculation that the movie is Godzilla vs. Kong 2. Of course, there’s no guarantee that the movie isn’t a solo Godzilla or Kong film, but the reports have at least made this scenario a subject of discussion. If the rumored fifth MonsterVerse movie really is bringing back both Titans, it may be that the plan is for them to renew their rivalry. Godzilla defeated Kong twice before already, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that their conflict has to end there.

A potential Godzilla vs. Kong 2 has ways of pitting the two against each other again. After all, Kong could still have a score to settle with Godzilla. Both passed on a chance for a rematch after Mechagodzilla’s defeat in Godzilla vs. Kong, but the two going their separate ways doesn’t prove that they’ve put their rivalry behind them. Both Titans were understandably exhausted and likely had no interest in continuing their battle at their time. If they cross paths again at full strength, the Titans may follow their natural instincts and resume their fight.

Kong roaring in Godzilla's face as they roar back in Godzilla Vs Kong

Kong has lost twice, but his courageous and defiant behavior could be enough to motivate him into another fight. By dropping the axe at the end of Godzilla vs. Kong, Kong seemingly acknowledged Godzilla as the alpha, which can be attributed at least partially to the latter’s decision to let him go. If Kong develops more confidence or adopts a different attitude when they meet again, Godzilla could launch another attack. That’s certainly plausible, especially since the movie’s ending positioned Kong to be the alpha of the Hollow Earth. Having dominion over other Titans could boost Kong’s standing in the MonsterVerse and make him a bigger threat to Godzilla’s alpha status.

In Godzilla’s mind, he’s already proven his dominance over Kong, which made more fighting between them unnecessary. But if Kong gets out of line, rejects Godzilla’s position as the alpha, or tries to rival his authority over the Titans, Godzilla may feel inclined to put him in his place for the third time in Godzilla vs. Kong 2. But if they don’t ultimately fight in the movie, the sequel could turn out to be a proper team-up that sees them work together for the majority of the movie, as opposed to putting aside their differences at the very end.
