Reports about Godzilla vs. Kong 2 explain the Godzilla show’s confusing placement on the MonsterVerse timeline. Ahead of the recent rumors about a Godzilla vs. Kong sequel filming in Australia, Apple TV+ confirmed its intentions to make a MonsterVerse TV show set after the events of 2014’s Godzilla.

The upcoming MonsterVerse series will explore the aftermath of Godzilla’s victory over the MUTOs as well as the game-changing reveal that Titans exist. This important period of the MonsterVerse’s history was skipped over by the movies, as Godzilla: King of the Monsters jumped ahead by five years. And with Godzilla vs. Kong pushing the MonsterVerse another five years into the future, it appeared that the MonsterVerse had put this era behind them. However, Apple TV+’s untitled Godzilla show is providing the MonsterVerse with an unexpected opportunity to dive deep into this unexplored time period when Monarch was still a big secret and very few of the Titans had been discovered.

Though going back to 2014 is a choice with some interesting storytelling potential, it’s also a rather limiting one in comparison to what it could do in the present. The number of known Titans before King of the Monsters has already been confirmed, which prevents the show from introducing entirely new Titans. Also, the Hollow Earth world hasn’t been found yet, so it can’t be shown either. The MonsterVerse opting to make a show with such a restrictive timeline seemed like an odd creative choice until the news about Godzilla vs. Kong 2. The idea that the MonsterVerse isn’t done making movies explains why the show is avoiding the present, which has likely been reserved for big-screen projects.

Kong in the Hollow Earth Ending

While it would naturally be entertaining to see how things are progressing in the MonsterVerse after Godzilla vs. Kong, it makes sense for these matters to be addressed only in the movies to come. What happened to Kong after he found a new home, how the world’s powers will capitalize on the discovery of the Hollow Earth, and the current activities of Godzilla are all storylines that would better fit Godzilla vs. Kong 2 or solo movies for the two monsters.

When Apple TV+’s Godzilla show was first announced, it was hard to say if the MonsterVerse’s Godzilla or Kong would be back on the big screen at all, so there was certainly some concern that the show wasn’t taking full advantage of the world-building the previous entries have done. But if Godzilla vs. Kong 2 really is on the horizon, the MonsterVerse using the show to explore the past instead of the future feels like the logical approach. As long as more movies are being made, viewers can still observe what comes next for Godzilla, Kong, and the rest of the MonsterVerse’s Titans.
