A Godzilla: King of the Monsters Easter egg reveals how Anguirus could work if he were to appear in Godzilla vs. Kong 2. Anguirus, the ankylosaurus-like kaiju who famously teamed up with Godzilla in a few of Toho’s movies, has yet to appear in the MonsterVerse. However, he’s one of several Toho monsters with a reasonable chance of appearing in Godzilla vs. Kong 2.
Interestingly, the Anguirus Easter egg cleverly included in King of the Monsters demonstrates how he’d be adapted to the MonsterVerse. When the underwater city was destroyed by the nuclear blast, the skeleton of a creature that could easily be identified as Anguirus was briefly spotted amongst the ruins of the city. This indicates that Anguirus was a Hollow Earth Titan and potentially a resident of Godzilla's home. This provides a framework for Anguirus’ MonsterVerse debut, as it's not outside the realm of possibility that another member of his species is alive somewhere in the hidden Hollow Earth world.
Anguirus Can Team Up With Godzilla In The MonsterVerse
It could be that in the MonsterVerse, Godzilla’s dynamic with Anguirus is the opposite of the relationship he shares with Kong. InGodzilla vs. Kong, Godzilla and Kong started out as enemies due to their ancient rivalry, whereas Godzilla and Anguirus could be ancestral allies who fought beside each other in the Titan War and perhaps in other conflicts as well. If that’s the case, Godzilla could find himself relying on a new version of Anguirus when the “undiscovered threat” teased by Godzilla vs. Kong 2’s synopsis finally emerges.
While Anguirus has fought Godzilla before, his most iconic roles (Godzilla vs. Gigan and Destroy All Monsters) involve the two teaming up, which is all the more reason why a MonsterVerse interpretation of Anguirus should be utilized as a force for good. Presumably, Godzilla will already have Kong on his side in the upcoming sequel, but since there’s no confirmation on if the “threat” is plural, it’s possible that Godzilla vs. Kong 2 does have room for multiple Titans to join forces with Godzilla. Depending on what the stakes are, it may take a small army of them to prevail. That could be where new Titans like Anguirus come into play.
Will Anguirus Appear In Godzilla vs. Kong 2?
For now, there’s no word on whether or not Legendary even intends to introduce any more monsters from Toho’s library. But, it’s important to note that in spite of the high costs that come with their licensing rights, both Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong added at least one to the MonsterVerse lineup. If Godzilla vs. Kong 2 follows the trend, the movie should borrow a kaiju or two from Toho’s movies. And as one of the biggest Toho kaiju the MonsterVerse hasn’t used yet, Anguirus is a strong candidate for a major role in Godzilla vs. Kong 2.
