The origin of the Titans in the MonsterVerse is expected to play an important role in Godzilla vs. Kong. While the biggest selling point of the upcoming 2021 film is, of course, the highly anticipated showdown between the King of the Monsters and the King of Skull Island, the human characters in the movie will have their own problems to deal with.

Following a tease in the Godzilla: King of the Monsters credits, it was confirmed by the Godzilla vs. Kong synopsis that Monarch’s next mission is to investigate the origin of the Titans. While trying to stop a “human conspiracy” that threatens to bring an end to all the Titans, the main characters will explore the mysterious Hollow Earth tunnels on a quest for the truth. It could be that the greatest obstacle standing in their way will be Mechagodzilla, who could be used as a weapon against both the humans and the Titans.

What Monarch will discover when it heads back into the Hollow Earth tunnels remains to be seen. Whatever it is, though, it could be just as a big of a gamechanger as the underwater city discovered in King of the Monsters.

What The MonsterVerse Has Revealed About The Titans So Far

Kong: Skull Island established the Hollow Earth theory, which was a belief that giant monsters could travel in secret on the planet through a system of underground tunnels. That would explain how they’re able to get around without drawing the attention of humans. Godzilla: King of the Monsters proved this theory when they followed Godzilla through an underwater tunnel. While there, they encountered an ancient, forgotten civilization that apparently worshiped him as their god; it was said that this place was once Godzilla’s home.

The redacted text in the credits of the movie further expanded on the history of the Titans. It was revealed that even though the city in the underwater city suggested that these people got along peacefully with the Titans, the situation wasn’t that simple. It would seem that at first, humans enjoyed a symbiotic relationship with Titans that involved them living near the monsters for protection. But in time, these people became increasingly dependent on them and even plotted to weaponize them. Somehow, they found a way to enslave the Titans and started using them in wars against other civilizations. It’s possible that they achieved this through telepathic communication. Once the humans’ hold on the Titans was broken, a war between man and monster broke out. What resulted was a “cataclysm” that triggered an Ice Age and scattered the humans to different corners of the planet.

The Titans Could Have Originated From Hollow Earth

At this point, it’s become fairly obvious that the Hollow Earth is much more than a tunnel system used for underground travel. One Godzilla vs. Kong synopsis called it “the secret realm of the Titans”. It’s possible that the Hollow Earth itself is the original home of these creatures. Being able to live down there makes sense, considering that caverns in Hollow Earth are big enough to allow for monster fights. Godzilla, Kong’s species, the MUTOs, and all the others may have originated from that place. A massive world could exist down there somewhere, potentially located below Skull Island, which is known to contain a gateway into Hollow Earth. If the birthplace of the Titans is under Kong’s home, that could be the reason why the Titans are being drawn toward Skull Island. It may be their natural instinct to return home.

If this is the case, then why did they leave in the first place? While exploring the tunnels, Monarch could find evidence of a disaster or a conflict of some kind that forced them to flee to the surface. It may be that a geological catastrophe made the conditions in their “secret realm” unlivable. An alternative explanation is that a group of hostile, territorial Titans took over the area and are occupying it now. The redacted text did hint at the existence of a secret Titan that could bring civilization to an end. A creature that dangerous could be threatening enough to scare away several of the Titans. If the latter reason is correct, this could spell trouble for the Monarch scientists in Godzilla vs. Kong. Their expedition could draw the attention of these Titans and lead to a monster war” with Godzilla and Kong.

What The Titans’ Origin Story Could Mean For The MonsterVerse

The Titans hailing from a “secret realm” deep beneath the surface of the Earth could have massive repercussions for both the movie and the MonsterVerse as a whole. First of all, it could mean that the movie’s real villain isn’t Mechagodzilla but the Titans they may find down there; one of them could be the winged serpent from Playmates’ Godzilla vs. Kong toyline. Not much is known about this monster, apart from his name, Warbat. This monster may be incredibly dangerous, especially if he was the secret Titan teased by the King of the Monsters credits. Early toy leaks indicated that his name was Nozuki, but it may be that there are actually two of them who have slightly different appearances.

Discovering the origin of the Titans could have a lasting impact on the MonsterVerse that goes beyond Godzilla vs. Kong. What they find may provide setup for future MonsterVerse movies. Godzilla: King of the Monsters already implied that the number of known Titans will continue to go up, but it may go up even higher once this “secret realm” is found. As previously noted, most of the Titans may have left long ago, but plenty could still be down there. If they live so far down in the Hollow Earth, Ghidorah’s call may not have reached them, but Monarch’s search could. Once they wake up, more Titans could emerge in movies such as Godzilla 3.

While many may be original Titans, some could be Toho monsters as well. For instance, it may be revealed that one of the residents of Hollow Earth is King Caesar or Gorosaurus. Another possibility is Anguirus. A skeleton identical to his species was spotted in the underwater city, so a living Anguirus could appear in a sequel as an ally to Godzilla.
