Apple TV+’s Godzilla show has an opportunity to explore a hidden part of the MonsterVerse’s history. Confirmed to be in development for Apple’s streaming service, an untitled Godzilla TV series will be the next live-action project to visit the cinematic universe of Godzilla, Kong, Rodan, Mothra, and all the other Titans. But instead of picking up where Godzilla vs. Kong left off, the show is expected to dive into the past.

An official description for the series has shed light on where the story takes place in the MonsterVerse’s timeline. It’s been said that the show, which will kick off after the Titan battle in San Francisco, will deal directly with humanity coping with the realization that monsters exist and the mystery of Monarch. These details mean that Apple TV+’s Godzilla show will be set shortly after 2014’s Godzilla movie and presumably a few years before the emergence of Ghidorah in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. There was a gap of five years between the two MonsterVerse installments.

The TV series following a story that occurs within this timeframe will enable it to explore an important period in the MonsterVerse’s history that King of the Monsters skipped over. It was explained early on in the movie that Monarch had become aware of the existence of “17 and counting Titans”, which indicates that multiple Titan discoveries were made after Godzilla’s ending. Monarch already knew of a few of these creatures (such as Rodan, Kong, and Mothra), but Dr. Serizawa’s comments and the exchange he had with Mark made it clear that Monarch’s knowledge of Titans had increased drastically since Godzilla.

The number of known Titans skyrocketed after Godzilla, which is what makes it such an interesting time for the MonsterVerse to look at with Apple TV+’s Godzilla show. More Titans being uncovered when humanity was still trying to process Godzilla’s clash with the MUTOs creates a lot of storytelling potential for the show’s human characters. It would also provide some insight into how Monarch handled the massive amount of activity that the organization experienced within those five years. Monarch likely had to ramp up their operations everywhere when they started finding so many Titans.

Plus, it would put the show in a good position to use a handful of the MonsterVerse’s established Titans. The series could reveal exactly how Monarch came across Scylla, Behemoth, or Methuselah. Another possibility is that it can address the discoveries of King of the Monsters’ missing Titans, like Yamata no Orochi, Quetzalcoatl, or Leviathan, whose names were all spotted on monitor screens. Regardless, the number of Titans that Monarch has found over the years gives Apple TV+’s Godzilla show plenty of different options when it comes to bringing in monsters that have either received limited screen-time or have never been seen on the big screen.
