Godzilla vs. Kong’s opening battle could be between Kong and Mechagodzilla. Though the focus of the movie is on Kong’s struggle with the King of the Monsters, that doesn’t mean the movie has to begin and end with them. Instead, Godzilla vs. Kong could open with a different monster fight, which could lead into Godzilla’s fight with Kong.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters wrapped up with the titular character killing Ghidorah and becoming the new alpha of the Titans. His new title was acknowledged by the former minions of Ghidorah (Rodan, Behemoth, the third MUTO, Methuselah, and Scylla) who all bowed down to their new master in a showing of respect. Godzilla has taken command of the Titans of the MonsterVerse, but apparently not all of them are going to look at him as their leader. One example of this would be the King of Skull Island, Kong. Since he didn’t accept Ghidorah as his alpha, there’s no reason for him to look at Godzilla any differently. As a monster who could serve as a rival alpha, Kong may even challenge Godzilla.

Regardless of the reason for their fight in the upcoming 2021 MonsterVerse movie, Godzilla vs. Kong is expected to feature a definitive winner. Also, they won’t be the only Titans coming to blows in the film. Since the movie will involve a monster war”, numerous Titans could be taking part in the action. Among them are a winged serpent and Godzilla’s robotic counterpart from Toho’s movies, Mechagodzilla. The inclusion of both Titans was spoiled by Godzilla vs. Kong action figure leaks. The most interesting addition is of course Mechagodzilla, who would be the MonsterVerse’s first manmade Titan. While it could be that the movie is saving Mechagodzilla for the final battle that forces Godzilla and Kong to team up, it’s possible that he’ll be going up against Kong alone in the movie’s opening action sequence.

Kong And Mechagodzilla’s Stories Begin With Skull Island

Mechagodzilla

The Godzilla vs. Kong teases in the Godzilla: King of the Monsters credits provide evidence that the next MonsterVerse installment will begin with Skull Island. It was said that the Titans are being drawn toward the island. Plus, it was mentioned in the credits that a mechanized giant” was being constructed on Skull Island. At the time, it was speculated that the “mechanized giant” in question was Mechagodzilla, but the reveal that the robotic kaiju is indeed in the movie all but confirmed it. It’s also known from the credits that Monarch’s investigation into the origin of the Titans will take them to the Hollow Earth entry point on Skull Island.

Aside from all this evidence, Skull Island being the starting point for Godzilla vs. Kong makes sense in regards to Kong’s story. This place is his home, so even if the movie does intend to take him off-island for the first time in the MonsterVerse, he has to at least begin the movie on Skull Island before heading elsewhere. What all this means is that Mechagodzilla and Kong have a higher chance of fighting each other first than Godzilla has of encountering either Titan. Both Titans will presumably be on Skull Island when the movie opens, whereas Godzilla may be on his way. When he gets there, the two Titans may already clashed.

How A Mechagodzilla vs. Kong Fight Could End

Mechagodzilla vs Godzilla vs King Kong

If Mechagodzilla is activated by Monarch or the movie’s human villains, Kong could respond to his presence on the island with force. Not understanding what he is or what his purpose is, Kong could view him as a threat to the island and attack. Or, if it’s the villains that are responsible, it may be Mechagodzilla who makes the first hostile move. Either way, a fight is sure to erupt when Kong and Mechagodzilla lay eyes on each other. In Toho’s movies, Mechagodzilla’s arsenal of laser cannons, missiles, and other ranged weapons make him one of Godzilla’s most dangerous opponents, so it’s easy to imagine his MonsterVerse counterpart giving Kong all he can handle. It won’t help that Kong lacks the raw power of Godzilla. His fists may not able to do significant damage to Kong’s extremely durable, metal exterior. Kong’s main weapons are his agility and intelligence, and it remains to be seen how useful they’ll be against an adversary like Mechagodzilla.

In fact, he may even fall to Mechagodzilla. Kong losing seems like a logical course for the movie to take, especially if the idea is to make Mechagodzilla feel like a truly powerful threat. To show audiences just how strong Mechagodzilla is and make him a respectable villain, it’s necessary that he puts on an impressive performance. A short fight that results in Mechagodzilla getting a somewhat easy victory would easily prove how threatening he is.

Mechagodzilla vs. Kong Can Set Up The Fight With Godzilla

Godzilla vs. Kong has been delayed to May 21, 2020

A battle between Mechagodzilla and Kong at the beginning of Godzilla vs. Kong could set up the rest of the movie, particularly the conflict that unfolds between the two main Titans. 1974’s Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla may provide a template for how the MonsterVerse will use Mechagodzilla in his first fight. In the movie, Mechagodzilla – disguised as the real Godzilla – made his grand entrance by beating Anguirus to a bloody pulp. The advanced technology that exists in the MonsterVerse could allow the humans to make a disguise for Mechagodzilla that’s just as convincing. If that’s the case, Kong may initiate a fight with Godzilla later in the movie because he thinks that he and Mechagodzilla are one and the same.

Alternatively, a battle with Mechagodzilla could simply put Kong on guard. Getting into a fight with him could put him in such a defensive and aggressive mood against invaders that when another Titan arrives on the scene, Kong’s first instinct would be fight. Mechagodzilla’s similarities with Godzilla may only worsen his attitude toward him. Another possibility is that if Mechagodzilla wins, Kong will recover and take off after him, possibly by pursuing him through the Hollow Earth tunnels. Since Godzilla has a habit of checking out certain disturbances, he may go looking for Mechagodzilla, with his search putting him on a collision course with Kong. This could be what begins a new MonsterVerse rivalry that lasts through most of the movie. Once their own struggle reaches a resolution (which could take more than one battle), the titular duo in Godzilla vs. Kong can put their differences aside and come together to stop Mechagodzilla from destroying all the Titans.
