Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts supports the #ContinueTheMonsterVerse campaign. The MonsterVerse started back in 2014 when Legendary made an American Godzilla movie for today's generation. The Gareth Edwards film was followed by Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which continued to introduce new and iconic Godzilla monsters to the franchise. However, the endgame was always to pit Godzilla against King Kong.
Godzilla vs. Kong just recently hit theaters and HBO Max after being delayed from its 2020 release due to the coronavirus pandemic. Adam Wingard's giant monster brawl was one of the most anticipated movies of the year, but Warner Bros. and Legendary have yet to confirm any other MonsterVerse movies are in development. Due to the popularity of Godzilla vs. Kong, #ContinueTheMonsterVerse has been trending, something that even Legendary's official Twitter account shared. While kaiju lovers want another film, the movement just gained another supporter.
After Legendary posted a tweet revealing that #ContinueTheMonsterVerse was trending, Vogt-Roberts decided to comment and retweet the post. As many would expect, the director is in support of seeing more films in the franchise.
Godzilla vs. Kong's ending could easily act as the end of the franchise since there wasn't a looming cliffhanger. However, there is still plenty of room for sequels. Godzilla vs. Kong 2 likely won't happen for years to come, if ever, but a sequel to Kong: Skull Island seems plausible. The end of the film saw Kong claim Hollow Earth as his new home. There are likely more creatures living in Hollow Earth than just the Warbats, Hell Hawks, and the few other creatures seen in Godzilla vs. Kong. Kong: Hollow Earth has of course not been confirmed yet; however, the studios would benefit from bringing Vogt-Roberts based on his passion for the franchise. Godzilla 3 could also still happen, with the giant lizard just swimming away at the end of the movie. Godzilla: King of the Monsters potentially set up a Destroyah storyline with the use of the oxygen destroyer, and that is only of many monsters Godzilla could fight next.
Warner Bros. and Legendary have yet to announce a future project in the MonsterVerse despite the popularity of Kong: Skull Island and the other MonsterVerse movies. Still, it seems completely plausible at this point. Godzilla vs. Kong has already broken box-office records and even dethroned Zack Snyder's Justice League as having HBO Max's highest four-day debut viewership of any movie or TV show. Godzilla vs. Kong has also gotten generally positive reviews, with many praising the movie's monster action despite a thin plotline. With Wingard's film being a huge success for everyone involved, it seems like it's only a matter of time before Warner Bros. announces a new movie in the MonsterVerse.
