Kong’s dangerous new weapon in Godzilla vs. Kong could actually be made from a part of Godzilla’s body. The highly-anticipated showdown between the two rival alphas in the upcoming 2021 MonsterVerse movie will mark the second time the monsters have clashed on the big screen. This time around, however, the primate powerhouse has the advantage of wielding a weapon: perhaps a direct result of encountering his rival Titan Godzilla.

Fresh off his victory in Godzilla: King of the Monsters over Ghidorah, Godzilla will return to take part in what Legendary is calling the “battle of the century” with the King of Skull Island as his foe. The ending of the fight in the 1962 King Kong vs. Godzilla favored Kong, but things may play out quite differently in the MonsterVerse. Even though their fight may or may not be interrupted by the arrival of Mechagodzilla, the battle between Godzilla and Kong is confirmed to have a definitive winner, which means that by the end of the movie, the question of which Titan is superior will receive a clear answer.

A toy associated with the upcoming movie may shed some light on what viewers can expect from the epic showdown. A Kong action figure from a Godzilla vs. Kong Playmates toyline features the monster packaged with an axe. The appearance of the axe suggests that this weapon has a brutal origin in the MonsterVerse: The color and shape actually match up with the design of the dorsal plates on Godzilla’s back, which is bad news for the King of the Monsters.

Godzilla vs Kong Spikes Dorsal Plates Battle Axe

If this is really the case, it would seem that Kong will do what no other Titan has done before and break off some of Godzilla’s back spikes, which is sure to result in some excruciating pain for Godzilla. Afterward, he may fashion the spikes to a club and use this against Godzilla. A monster making an axe may feel a little far-fetched, but Kong has always been known as an intelligent beast. Godzilla: King of the Monsters director and Godzilla vs. Kong co-writer Mike Dougherty has described Kong as a “tool-user, so Kong fashioning together a weapon to use against his opponent isn’t impossible.

What will Kong be able to accomplish wielding an axe created from Godzilla’s spikes? Since they’re part of a creature who may be the most powerful Titan in the MonsterVerse, it makes sense that they could serve as a potentially lethal weapon. Kong badly injuring or even killing Godzilla with his own spikes would show just how ruthless Kong can be in combat. But all things considered, such a level of ruthlessness may be needed.

Kong may be getting a size boost, but that doesn’t put him on equal terms with Godzilla, who is still bigger and stronger. Godzilla will have raw power on his size, while Kong will have to rely a lot on agility and his wits. Furthermore, Kong has Godzilla’s atomic breath to worry about; the same weapon that gave him so much trouble in the '60s King Kong vs. Godzilla could prove to be his downfall in Godzilla vs. Kong. Since he has no proper defense, an axe strong enough to cut into Godzilla’s thick hide may be the only way he’s going to win.
