Of the three main monsters who joined Godzilla in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the one with the best chance of returning for Godzilla vs. Kong is Rodan. After all, Godzilla and Rodan seem to be the only two who survive the final battle.
Directed by Adam Wingard and scheduled for a March 2020 release, Godzilla vs. Kong will serve as the fourth installment in Legendary's MonsterVerse. The movie is expected to delve into a human conspiracy to destroy all the Titans, as well as Monarch's quest to discover the origin of the monsters. How and why the two Titans will fight hasn't been revealed, but the credits sequence at the end of King of the Monsters reveals that Titans will be drawn to King Kong's home, Skull Island. It's possible that Godzilla will be among them.
If and when Godzilla travels to Skull Island, Rodan may be brought along for the ride. Rodan's arc in King of the Monsters began with the King of the Skies taking on Ghidorah. After his defeat, he becomes the first Titan to accept Ghidorah as the alpha. Later on, Rodan manages to mortally wound Mothra, while also surviving being stabbed by Mothra's stinger. After King Ghidorah's defeat, though, Rodan bows in respect to Godzilla, and the other Titans follow suit.
There's a way for both Mothra and King Ghidorah to come back to the MonsterVerse (even though both are dead), but for Rodan, a role in Godzilla vs. Kong or Godzilla 3 is much easier to imagine. Rodan could certainly be in the picture when Godzilla and King Kong collide, thought the role he'll potentially play in Godzilla vs. Kong could be worlds apart from his appearance in King of the Monsters. Now that Rodan has accepted Godzilla as the new alpha, he may act as a minion of sorts who accompanies Godzilla on his next journey, whether it be Skull Island or somewhere else entirely.
Rodan's role in Godzilla vs. Kong could be reminiscent of Toho's version of the character. In Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster and Destroy All Monsters, Rodan was an ally of Godzilla. Godzilla vs. Monster Zero took it to another level by showcasing what Godzilla and Rodan could accomplish while working together as a duo. All things considered, Rodan is arguably Godzilla's greatest ally. The ending of King of the Monsters could pave the way for this relationship to be represented in Godzilla vs. Kong.
