Godzilla vs. Kong is set five years after the events of Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The fourth installment in Legendary and Warner Bros.' MonsterVerse, Godzilla vs. Kong, will see the highly-anticipated epic showdown between the monster movie icons. Directed by Adam Wingard, the film will see Millie Bobby Brown and Kyle Chandler reprising their roles from Godzilla: King of the Monsters, along with a cast including Alexander Skarsgård, Rebecca Hall, and Brian Tyree Henry. The movie is one of Warner Bros 2021 movies that will release both in theaters and on HBO Max on March 31 as part of the studio's latest release plan.

The film's first trailer debuted in late January and gave fans a look at the first big-screen battle between Kong and Godzilla since the 1962 crossover movie King Kong vs. Godzilla. However, unlike that film, Godzilla vs. Kong is expected to have a definitive winner between the two creatures. The trailers make it clear that Kong is the hero needed to protect humanity against the destructive Godzilla. The trailer generated excitement with teases of epic action sequences, but as more footage has been released, it seems that Godzilla could have the upper hand in the fight, with Kong appearing as the underdog. A sequel to Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong was expected to take place sometime after the events of the two movies, and now the timeline has been confirmed.

Speaking with Collider, producer Alex Garcia summarized the movie's plot, confirming the film takes place about five years after the events of King of the Monsters.

Garcia also revealed that the movie would see Godzilla acting a bit erratically, attacking cities for seemingly no reason, leading the organization Monarch on a mission into the Hollow Earth through Skull Island to lure the monsters back beneath the surface. While fans will remember from the previous Godzilla films that Godzilla was on the side of humanity, it doesn't necessarily mean that he will always stay on that side, as he can be shown to have his own motives. In King of the Monsters, it was hinted that Godzilla could still turn and become the villain, seemingly foreshadowing Godzilla vs. Kong. With Skull Island taking place 40 years before Godzilla vs. Kong, fans can also expect to see a bigger and stronger Kong.

With Godzilla vs. Kong set about five years after the events of King of the Monsters, it looks like the humans will see themselves on the opposite side of the titular monster, as foreshadowed, while potentially exploring more of Godzilla's backstory. Fans will finally get to find out what's in store when the blockbuster releases in late March.
