A “monster war” is coming to the MonsterVerse in Godzilla vs. Kong, and it can shape the franchise's future. Recently, new images were released of action figures in an upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong toyline from Playmates. On the back of the packaging is a plot synopsis that’s slightly different from previously released descriptions. What stands out is the line that says, “the monster war rages on the surface and deep within our world as the spectacular secret realm of the titans known as the Hollow Earth is revealed!”. This is the first confirmation that a “monster war” of some kind will occur in the movie.

Godzilla vs. Kong, the fourth installment in Legendary’s MonsterVerse, has been described as a “spectacular battle for the ages” between the two titular Titans, who haven’t clashed in over 50 years. The last time the American and Japanese pop culture icons came to blows was in Toho’s King Kong vs. Godzilla. Similar to the last fight, Kong will be getting a massive size upgrade that will allow him to fight on Godzilla’s level. The ending of King Kong vs. Godzilla was debated for years, even though Toho claimed victory went to Kong. One thing that’s said to be different about their next encounter is that there will be a definitive winner.

The showdown between the King of the Monsters and the King of Skull Island will be complicated by other matters. While their struggle is playing out, the movie’s villains will be plotting a conspiracy to put an end to all the Titans. Meanwhile, Monarch will be busy investigating the origin of the monsters in the Hollow Earth tunnels beneath Skull Island. So far, it’s unknown how these events will affect Godzilla and Kong’s fight, or if it will have an impact on the outcome in anyway. Regardless, the reveal that the battle will be a part of a “monster war” could mean big things for Godzilla vs. Kong.

More Titans Will Appear In Godzilla vs. Kong

Behemoth is a new Titan in Godzilla: King of the Monsters

A war can’t be fought between just two characters. A monster war in Godzilla vs. Kong means that other participants must be involved. Other Titans have been leaked and rumored, but so far, Legendary has carefully avoiding releasing any official details that hint at any more Titans. As for who these monsters could be, the presence of Mechagodzilla has already been spoiled by toy leaks. The same goes for Nozuki, an original MonsterVerse Titan seemingly created for Godzilla vs. Kong. There’s also Warbat, who is either just another name for Nozuki or a creature that’s similar in appearance.

The MonsterVerse is actually full of Titans that could have a presence in the sequel. Mothra died, but her cycle of life, death and rebirth means that she could be included nonetheless. Ghidorah could theoretically return as Mecha-King Ghidorah, but his chances aren’t as good as monsters like Rodan. Rodan didn’t die in King of the Monsters, and for this reason he would be one of the easiest Titans to bring back into the fold. Rodan was an ally to Godzilla in Toho’s movies, and could be again in the MonsterVerse. Rodan could be joined by Scylla, Behemoth, Methuselah, the third M.U.T.O., and any of the 11 missing Titans from King of the Monsters.

Kong Can’t Fight Godzilla’s Titans Alone

A problem that Godzilla vs. Kong presents for Kong is that Godzilla was just crowned “King of the Monsters” when he dethroned Ghidorah. Rodan, Scylla, Methuselah, Behemoth, the third M.U.T.O., and possibly more all answer to him now. Kong, on the other hand, is really only the alpha of Skull Island. If he has to fight Godzilla, his only hope is that his enemy doesn’t bring his army of Titans along with him. Even if Kong is a match for him, he can’t beat all of Godzilla’s Titans. As things currently stand, Godzilla certainly has enough Titans at his command to wage a monster war, but the same can’t be said for Kong, who doesn’t bring anything to the table outside of his own strength and intelligence.

Kong Can Become A Rival Alpha To Godzilla

A way exists for Kong to properly contend with Godzilla and his minions. Ghidorah’s battle with Rodan and the final battle between Godzilla and Ghidorah set the standard for how becoming the alpha works in the MonsterVerse. Ghidorah was able to gain Rodan’s loyalty simply by beating him, while Godzilla proved himself by taking down the alpha. Kong could acquire some followers of his own by attaining an impressive victory or two. The Godzilla: King of the Monsters credits revealed that numerous Titans are headed to Skull Island, which would provide Kong with plenty of potential opponents. If Kong could defeat them but not kill them, they may decide to switch sides. If this were to happen, the MonsterVerse would have two alphas at once. Of course, neither of the rival alphas would be content with this situation. Kong’s Titans could head into battle with Godzilla’s Titans, and then Godzilla vs. Kong’s monster war would kick off.

Mechagodzilla Can Appear And Destroy All The Titans

Godzilla vs. Kong’s monster war may not be a two-sided conflict. Mechagodzilla represents a third party who would be a danger to all the monsters. As a manmade Titan, he’d be a wild card who wouldn’t fit on Godzilla or Kong’s side in the war. It stands to reason that Mechagodzilla will be the weapon that the movie’s villains will use to accomplish their goal of eliminating all the monsters. An arsenal of missiles and laser cannons make Godzilla’s robotic counterpart a threat that could alter the course of the war. It’s also been theorized that humans have attempted to create organic Titans, so with that in mind, Mechagodzilla may have competent allies of his own when he heads off to fight Godzilla and Kong. They could be kept in line through mind control, which is a method that does appear to be possible in the MonsterVerse.

It’s important to point out that Mechagodzilla is one of the most dangerous villains Godzilla has ever faced in Toho’s movies. He’s even pushed Godzilla to the brink of death, which is something that Toho’s Ghidorah was never able to pull off. If his reputation in Toho’s films carries over to the MonsterVerse, Mechagodzilla could end up killing some - if not all - of the Titans. Given how powerful Mechagodzilla typically is, he could be the one who ultimately brings an end to the in-fighting between the Titans and the monster war itself. Godzilla and Kong may realize that Mechagodzilla is killing their kind. If so, they could agree to a temporary alliance and end the war to defeat him.
