In Godzilla vs. Kong, the clash between the two titular Titans could be instigated by Kong killing Godzilla’s minions. This scenario was made a real possibility by the credits of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which could have set up a bloody encounter between Kong and a handful of the Titans.

Godzilla was a loner in the MonsterVerse until the events of King of the Monsters, which saw a group of eco-terrorists led by Jonah (Charles Dance) and Emma (Vera Farmiga) unleash the Titans on the Earth. Their plan to save the planet was complicated by their failure to take into account the fact that Ghidorah is an alien who doesn’t respect the natural order. After taking control of the Titans who had previously been hibernating peacefully underground, Ghidorah faced off against Godzilla in a climactic showdown at the end of the movie. Thanks to Mothra’s heroic sacrifice, Godzilla succeeded in killing Ghidorah - and as a result of his victory, all the Titans in the vicinity bowed down to Godzilla and recognized him as their new alpha. Among the Titans now controlled by Godzilla are Rodan, Behemoth, Methuselah, Scylla, and the third M.U.T.O. Several - if not all - of King of the Monsters’ 11 missing Titans may regard him as the alpha as well.

These Titans could return in the fourth installment in the MonsterVerse, Godzilla vs. Kong. Directed by Adam Wingard and scheduled for a May 2021 release, the upcoming film will see Monarch investigate the origin of the Titans and deal with a conspiracy designed to eradicate them. While this is happening, Godzilla will be on a collision course with Kong, who has gone through a massive growth spurt since his battle with the Skrullcrawlers in the 1970s. As for why the two monsters may come to blows, the reason could be directly linked to the Titans that Godzilla reigns over in the MonsterVerse.

The Titans Left For Skull Island After King of the Monsters

Mystery Mountain Titan Methuselah in Godzilla King of the Monsters

The credits sequence in Godzilla: King of the Monsters revealed what happened to the Titans after they accepted Godzilla as their new alpha. Some, like Rodan, went back into hibernation, but others turned their attention to Kong’s home, Skull Island. One of the articles in the credits explained that the Titans were “drawn to Skull Island”. As for why they’d go there, it could be that the Titans can sense some mysterious activity taking place in the Hollow Earth beneath the island and are on their way to check on it. It’s even possible that Godzilla himself sent them there to scout out the area.

The credits didn’t specify about which of the Titans went to Skull Island, or how many there were. It’s also not clear if they made the journey together, or if they traveled separately. In any case, it would seem that quite a few of the MonsterVerse’s Titans had Skull Island as their destination. One line in the credits reveals that Kong’s home has become the “epicenter” for Titan sightings.

Kong Could Kill Godzilla's Minions

On Skull Island, Kong gets into fights with some of the region’s native creatures and occasionally has to deal with the re-emergence of his his ancestral enemies, the Skullcrawlers. However, Kong’s problems don’t involve any monsters who can be classified as “Titans”. All that is going to change, of course, thanks to King of the Monsters. The credits have made it clear that Kong’s home is about to receive some unwelcome visitors. Given he is naturally territorial, Kong is unlikely to accept these new arrivals with open arms, and as a Titan who won’t let any monster trespass on his territory unopposed, he will surely to react aggressively when he sees them. If so, a fight between Kong and these Titans could ensue.

What will happen when they fight? The Godzilla vs. Kong synopsis describes Kong as one of the most two powerful forces of nature (the other being Godzilla). If Kong really is that formidable, Godzilla’s minions may be in trouble. It could be that instead of driving them off, Kong will succeed in killing them. This could apply to one or two Titans, or it could be an entire group. Kong could end up killing all the Titans who come to Skull Island. A scenario such as this could occur in the beginning of the movie. Another possibility is that Kong’s Titan killing spree started offscreen, prior to Godzilla vs. Kong. This could be the case, since the line about Skull Island being the “epicenter” for Titan sightings reveals that some of the Titans are already on the island. Either way, Godzilla stands to lose a large percentage of the minions he picked up at the end of Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

What The Deaths of The Titans Means For Godzilla vs. Kong

Kong killing off some of the Titans early in Godzilla vs. Kong could have massive repercussions for the story. Godzilla may follow them to Skull Island and find that they’ve been slaughtered by a different Titan. As their alpha, Godzilla will understandably be outraged by their deaths. Unwilling to let this pass, Godzilla may set his sights on their killer. Kong killing Godzilla’s minions would be like a declaration of war from a rival alpha. This could be what motivates Godzilla to go after Kong in the movie.

A second consequence of Kong killing Godzilla’s minions could play out later on in the movie if and when they team up against a bigger threat. It’s been speculated that Mechagodzilla – whose inclusion was spoiled by a toy leak – will serve as a villain that Godzilla and Kong will have to battle at the end of the film. More villains could be in play as well, especially since Mechagodzilla may not be enough to sufficiently challenge the pair.

What could make beating these enemies more difficult for Godzilla and Kong is an early demise for a sizeable portion of King of the Monsters’ original Titans. This could have a big impact on the conditions of the movie’s final battle. The Titans being dead would remove a number of valuable allies who could tip the scales in Godzilla and Kong’s favor. Their absence could force Godzilla and Kong to rely only on each other when they face Mechagodzilla, and any other villain that Godzilla vs. Kong may be hiding.
