Godzilla vs. Kong has been confirmed to feature a mecha-titan made by Apex using King Ghidorah’s head – a development that could lead to a new titan war. Ghidorah was the primary titan antagonist of 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and it looks like his time wreaking havoc in the MonsterVerse isn’t over yet. The new mechanized version of the kaiju will play an undisclosed, but no doubt villainous role in the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong.

Over the course of its first three films, the MonsterVerse has built an expansive mythos surrounding the history of Earth’s titans. The various species of super-beasts once ruled the world in ages past, and many resided within the “Hollow Earth” beneath the planet’s surface. Godzilla vs. Kong has teased a new piece of MonsterVerse history in the form of an ancient titan war, which sets the stage for Godzilla and Kong’s longstanding rivalry and eventual showdown.

The return of King Ghidorah, even in cyborg form, has the potential to spark a second titan war in Godzilla vs. Kong or the following MonsterVerse films. Exciting as the duel between Godzilla and King Kong should be, a team-up between the two monsters could be equally as fun. That’s most likely to happen if a powerful new threat arises as a common enemy, and Ghidorah seems like a prime candidate.

King Ghidorah Can Control Other MonsterVerse Titans

In Godzilla: King of the Monster, King Ghidorah reemerges from a deep slumber and shakes Earth’s natural order to its hollow core. Ghidorah quickly claims the role of alpha titan over Godzilla, thereby bringing all lesser beasts across and beneath the Earth under his control. The dragon’s call alone has the power to bring kaiju around the globe under his dominion, and the titans cause wanton destruction while following Ghidorah’s commands.

King Ghidorah’s ability to bring other titans under his command is partially due to his sheer power, but it’s also implied to be connected to his extraterrestrial status. Simply speaking, Ghidorah is an invasive species on Earth, having fallen from space long ago. His presence among the other titans is an upset to the natural balance, which helps him quickly and effectively gain command over most of Earth’s monsters. Godzilla, and likely Kong, can resist because of their own alpha statuses, but even Godzilla had to defeat Ghidorah before the other titans knelt before him once more.

The alpha status held by Ghidorah would likely carry over into a mechanized form as well. If he is properly resurrected - even as a cyborg - Ghidorah would surely be able to draw at least some of the lesser titans back to his side. The dragon might not be able to assemble every titan to fight for him, but a good portion would likely defect from Godzilla and choose Ghidorah as their new leader. In this way, Ghidorah’s return could easily lead to a large-scale conflict.

Godzilla vs. Kong Will Introduce A Lot More Titans

Godzilla and the Titans in King of the Monsters

Reports have confirmed that Godzilla vs. Kong will add even more titans to the existing MonsterVerse cast. Two new flying titans – Hellhawk and Warbat – have already been shown in previews. Combined with the titans shown in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the new additions in Godzilla vs. Kong could add up to a massive array of kaiju spread all across the globe. Plus, the addition of more kaiju means more potential for a full-on titan war.

King of the Monsters showed many of these creatures in brief shots, but few of them did much other than cause general mayhem as the core story centered around Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidorah. If Ghidorah is once again able to summon titans to his side, however, those who resist - like Godzilla and Kong almost certainly would - might have a serious fight on their hands. The idea of Godzilla and Kong leading a force of titans against King Ghidorah’s own army is certainly an exciting one and is a definite possibility with Mecha-Ghidorah coming back.

The MonsterVerse's Original Titan War Explained

Godzilla vs kong acient titan war

The MonsterVerse has already laid the groundwork for a large-scale conflict in the lead-up to Godzilla vs. Kong. The film’s trailer mentions an ancient titan war, largely fought between Godzilla’s species and Kong’s. That history explains why the two beasts want to fight each other so badly, sending them on a collision course that will end in the film’s inevitable duel. Beyond simply setting up the battle between Kong and Godzilla, the addition of a titan war to MonsterVerse lore sets precedent for a similar conflict to occur again.

Clearly, the creatures are intelligent enough to organize, choose sides, and engage in battle with one another over an extended period of time. It’s possible that the old war had major ramifications for other titans beyond Godzilla and Kong, which would give a range of species potential reason to come back for round two. If King Ghidorah returns in mechanical form, there will be three clear alphas vying for dominance in the titan world, so the lesser beasts will likely pick one side or another to ensure their own survival.

Mecha-Ghidorah Could Start A Second Titan War

Mecha-King Ghidorah in Godzilla

When Alan Jonah led his eco-terrorist group to free King Ghidorah in King of the Monsters, he had one goal – set all the titans loose to decimate and reclaim the Earth. Jonah must be involved in the new Mecha-Ghidorah’s construction since he was the last person in possession of Ghidorah's head. That means his objective with the cyborg kaiju is the same as before, which is to facilitate a global titan rampage.

That will be tougher, however, with the new Ghidorah being only part of his former self, and with two other alphas battling in his absence. The dragon won’t be able to command authority as easily as the last time, which will make any bid for power messy and possibly lead to an all-out war. Whether it begins at the end of Godzilla vs. Kong or is simply teased for a future film, the potential of a second titan war is incredibly exciting for the MonsterVerse. Kong and Godzilla will have their battle but after Godzilla vs. Kong, they may have to face many more foes together.
