There’s only one monster in movie history who has met both Godzilla and King Kong - Gorosaurus. The Toho kaiju has been an enemy to one of the two, and an ally to the other, but he has yet to appear in Legendary and Warner Bros' MonsterVerse.

When it comes to giant monster movies, Godzilla and King Kong are easily the two biggest names in the business. Since his film debut in the 1954 classic, Toho’s Godzilla has appeared in over 30 movies. During which time he’s battled over a dozen villainous kaiju, whereas Kong, who has a comparably thinner resume, typically finds himself in conflict with humans and a few giant creatures located at his home, Skull Island. Though he’s a Hollywood property, he has starred in two Toho movies, one of which being a crossover with Godzilla. In May 2021, he’ll appear in what will only be his second meeting with Godzilla when they face off in Legendary’s Godzilla vs. Kong. Considering that the two are pop culture icons from two different countries, there has been very little room for overlap in their cinematic histories.

Interestingly, there is one monster who has crossed paths with both of them; Gorosaurus is a giant Allosaurus who appeared in 1967’s King Kong Escapes, the second (and last) movie Toho was able to make with Kong. In the film, Gorosaurus served as a secondary antagonist that Kong encountered on Mondo Island. Kong had to fight the creature to save a human female. To finish him off, Kong repeated his most famous killing move by breaking the dinosaur’s jaws.

Despite his death, he made a return in Destroy All Monsters one year later as one of several kaiju to be mind-controlled by aliens. After the human protagonists thwarted their plan, the monsters joined forces against Ghidorah. He participated in the final battle alongside Godzilla, Rodan, Anguirus, Mothra, Minilla, and Kumonga. In one scene, Godzilla and his allies held down Ghidorah while Gorosaurus delivered his signature move, a devastating kangaroo kick which knocked the creature on its back and left him vulnerable for more attacks.

Unfortunately, this was Gorosaurus’ last real role in a movie. He made cameo appearances in All Monsters Attack and Godzilla vs. Gigan, but they were created through brief stock footage from Destroy All Monsters. There’s no telling if or when his big screen drought will ever end, but its possible that one day audiences can get a chance to see Gorosaurus again. He could return once Toho reboots its Godzilla franchise, or he could be adapted to the MonsterVerse. Working him in would be relatively simple given that he’s a dinosaur and not a Titan who’s difficult to imagine existing somewhere in the MonsterVerse. Plus, Gorosaurus would be a surprisingly unique addition, as there aren’t many Titans who can be classified as genuine dinosaurs. If Legendary ever acquires the rights to the kaiju, he could be back for another meeting with Godzilla or Kong in a future MonsterVerse film

For right now, at least, Gorosaurus stands out as the only monster who can claim to have met both Godzilla and Kong. That's sure to change in Godzilla vs. Kong since other Titans are likely to be involved, but until then, this is a distinction that belongs only to Gorosaurus.
