If the MonsterVerse’s Godzilla had his best power, beating his opponent would be an easy task in Godzilla vs Kong. The strongest ability that Toho’s Godzilla possesses is the spiral heat ray, which was used by the monster in movies like Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, Godzilla: Final Wars, and more.

The MonsterVerse’s take on the Japanese pop culture icon will clash with the King of Skull Island in Godzilla vs. Kong, which is set for a May 2021 release in both theaters and on HBO Max. The fight will be their second big screen showdown, with the first being Toho’s 1962 crossover film, King Kong vs. Godzilla. Once again, Kong will receive a massive size boost so that he can fight on the same level as his enemy. Despite the upgrade, he’s likely to be seen as the underdog when he faces off against Godzilla, who just became the alpha of the Titans in Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

With all the raw power that Godzilla has at his disposal, it’s not hard to see why he would be the favorite going into the movie. But if the Titan shared one particular power belonging to his Toho counterpart, there’s a good chance that the odds would be even less in Kong’s favor. In the Heisei series, Godzilla used an ability known as the spiral heat ray. It’s essentially an upgraded version of his signature power, the atomic breath. In the past, Godzilla has used both blue and red spiral heat rays, with the red being the most powerful of the two. It can easily be recognized by the lightning-bolt-shaped spiral that surrounds the beam.

The spiral heat ray is Godzilla’s greatest weapon. Its potential for destruction is indicated by how it fared against villains like SpaceGodzilla, Destoroyah, Ghidorah, and Mechagodzilla. For instance, the much weaker blue spiral heat ray took out one of Ghidorah’s heads. The red version, which he gained from Rodan’s life essence, was enough to kill Mechagodzilla and SpaceGodzilla, the latter of which being a monster who is arguably Godzilla’s strongest villain. It was also thanks to his red spiral heat ray that he was able to finally defeat Destoroyah. The amount of power and heat that Godzilla packs into these blasts are the reason why it was the strongest tool in his arsenal during the Heisei era.

The MonsterVerse’s Godzilla has yet to demonstrate the capability to use the spiral heat ray, but if he did have this power, he’d have a clear path to victory over Kong. In King Kong vs. Godzilla, it was Godzilla’s atomic breath that proved to be Kong’s biggest obstacle in winning the fight. The blasts badly singed his fur, and as a monster who doesn’t have any beam attacks of his own, he didn’t really have a way of countering the atomic breath. Since Kong’s situation won’t be any different in the MonsterVerse, the atomic breath could once again serve as a major problem for him. Standing up against it will be challenging, but standing up to the spiral heat ray for an entire fight would be much harder to imagine. With no weapons that he can hit Godzilla with at a distance, Kong would be badly injured or close to defeat before he could even get within arms-length of him. For now, it would seem that this is a scenario Kong fans won’t have to worry about, but if Godzilla does end up attaining this power-up, Kong may not able to hold out for long in Godzilla vs Kong.
