Kong’s axe in Godzilla vs. Kong could be made from not just one Titan, but two. It’s already been made clear that at least one Titan, Godzilla, contributed to the construction of Kong’s axe. Certain shots in the trailer and action figures associated with the film have erased any lingering doubt about the origin of the weapon; somehow, one of Godzilla’s dorsal fins was used as the axe blade. Plus, the shape of the blade and its ability to glow blue are what gave this detail away.

Months ago, Godzilla vs. Kong toys left the implication that Kong would be carrying a giant axe into battle against the King of the Monsters. This theory was finally confirmed when Warner Bros. finally released the long-awaited trailer for the fourth installment in the MonsterVerse. In one noteworthy scene in the footage, Kong could be seen leaping into the air and catching Godzilla’s atomic breath with the axe, which proves just how useful it will be when the two have their big showdown. Currently, the axe is the subject of some of the biggest questions regarding Godzilla vs. Kong, as the movie has yet to provide any clues as to how Kong will obtain Godzilla’s back spikes.

One possibility is that the axe was made entirely from Godzilla’s ancestor, as Kong could find his skeleton from the Titan War that was fought thousands of years ago. While that would help explain how he acquired the back spikes, one problem with that is the axe handle. At close inspection, it’s obvious that the hilt is a Titan bone of some kind, but it doesn't seem to be Godzilla's. The 1:57 mark in the trailer shows it glowing a bright red, possibly due to the monster's radioactive nature. This color is only associated with the MonsterVerse’s Godzilla when he’s in his burning form, which could suggest that the bone belongs instead to a different Titan.

Godzilla vs Kong Axe Battle

What species the blade originated from is no mystery, but the axe hilt certainly is. The two serpent Titans that fight Kong in the trailer have red wings, but given that they have snake-like bodies, neither of them can be the source of the Titan bone. Another candidate is Hell Hawk, a monster whose name was revealed via a recent toy leak. This winged Titan was briefly glimpsed flying downward in the Godzilla vs. Kong trailer. Considering that he has a different body structure, it’s at least possible that he’s the Titan who provides Kong with his axe handle.

A more tragic explanation is that Kong kills Rodan (a Titan who pulsates with fiery, red energy) and takes a bone from his body. Alternatively, the bone could simply come from a long-deceased Titan whom audiences will never actually meet. Kong could recover the bone from the remains of a dead beast that he finds while exploring the Hollow Earth. Either way, the axe being connected to two separate creatures further demonstrates how special and unique it is in the MonsterVerse. The extraordinary capabilities of this weapon will make it instrumental to beating Gojira in Godzilla vs. Kong.
