Warner Bros. has given Godzilla vs. Kong a new March 2020 release date to avoid a clash with Fast & Furious 9. WB and Legendary are in the final stages of building towards the crossover event of their own cinematic universe - but one that isn't based on DC comics. The studios have been building a cinematic universe of the world's biggest monsters, aptly called the MonsterVerse, for the last few years as part of an effort to see Godzilla and Kong share the big screen.
Picking up after the events of this year's yet-to-be-released Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the versus film will pit the two dominant monsters against one another in some fashion. The film's cast is stacked with talent, headlined by the return of Millie Bobby Brown and Kyle Chandler from King of the Monsters, but also boasts a large ensemble of new characters for this world. There was already clear confidence in the plan for the crossover with production beginning before a proper Godzilla sequel hits theaters, and with it receiving a prime summer release date.
WB has now given Godzilla vs. Kong a new release date. THR shared the news that the crossover film will now hit theaters on March 13, 2020, instead of May 22 as previously planned. The reason for the change appears to be to give the film less competition at the box office, allowing it to potentially have a monstrous run worldwide.
As of right now, only Gambit and a mystery Blumhouse film are set to open in Godzilla vs. Kong's new weekend. The former hopeful Channing Tatum-starring vehicle will likely not be hitting this release date, which further paves the way for the MonsterVerse crossover film directed by Adam Wingard to rule. This is likely going to be a smart move for the movie too, as it otherwise would have to open opposite Fast & Furious 9. While it is impossible to know which film would win the weekend in such a matchup, not having to do battle with another major blockbuster will be good news for Godzilla vs. Kong's financial potential.
Even though the movie is still in production, anticipation is already high for what it could offer. The marketing for Godzilla: King of the Monsters has generated plenty of interest in the franchise and its future, so as long as the upcoming film doesn't disappoint, the crossover of the classic Toho monsters should be huge. And, thanks to this new opening weekend, Godzilla vs. Kong is once again positioned to be the king of the box office upon its arrival.
