Methuselah is one of the new Titans introduced in Godzilla: King of the Monsters and one of 17 Titans confirmed to exist in Legendary's MonsterVerse. The 17 Titans include a few classic Toho kaiju, but are mostly comprised of original monsters created specifically for the MonsterVerse franchise.

In-universe, the Titans have been inactive for centuries, but eco-terrorists led by Jonah (Charles Dance) and Emma (Vera Farmiga) introduce them to the modern world by waking up Rodan and King Ghidorah with the Orca. An unexpected consequence of their plan to save the world occurs when King Ghidorah wakes up all the other Titans. King Kong remains on Skull Island, but the other Titans answer Ghidorah's summons and begin to do his bidding. King Ghidorah's hold over them is broken after the three-headed monster is destroyed by Godzilla, who becomes the new King of the Monsters. Rodan and several other Titans are then shown bowing down to Godzilla in a show of respect at the end of the movie.

One of these Titans is Methuselah (Titanus Methuselah), a four-legged, rock-like Titan with horns on his head. He was being monitored at the Monarch outpost in Munich, Germany. He emerged from the ground after hearing Ghidorah's call. When his face was spotted in trailers for King of the Monsters, it was widely believed that the creature was Anguirus, one of Godzilla's biggest allies in the classic Toho films. Instead, he was introduced as Methuselah, the Mountain Titan.

What Godzilla's Methuselah Name Means

Mystery Mountain Titan Methuselah in Godzilla King of the Monsters

Methuselah shares his name with the Biblical figure known for his unusual longevity. Being named after Methuselah is an indication of the Titan's age. It may mean that Methuselah is the oldest of the Titans, which is saying a lot, considering that Behemoth is 20,000 years old - another Titan in the MonsterVerse who had his name taken from the Bible.

Methuselah's Origin In The MonsterVerse

The novelization of King of the Monsters reveals more tidbits about Methuselah's backstory and how he came to be in Munich. According to a legend, Methuselah arrived in the region in the Middle Ages. The space he occupies in King of the Monsters was once the location of a small village, but it was destroyed by Methuselah, who took its place and settled into the ground. A villager who left home prior to Methuselah's arrival returned to find his village gone, having been replaced by a mysterious new "mountain". Supposedly, the "mountain" remained a part of Munich's geography until King Ghidorah proceeded to wake up the Titans. Methuselah serves as an example of a Titan becoming one with the natural world.
