Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty teases King Ghidorah with an image that makes a reference to a classic Godzilla film. As fans are still waiting for official art or even a real glimpse at the golden three-headed dragon, the image is sure to get fans hyped up for the character's official reveal.

The much-anticipated sequel to 2014's Godzilla sees the King of Monsters "vie for supremacy" with three other gigantic monsters once believed to be myths: King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan. All three monsters belong to Toho, the Japanese studio responsible for making 29 Godzilla films, including the original movie in 1954. Legendary Pictures announced in 2014 that they had acquired the rights to use the monsters, making it possible for the sequel to feature some of Godzilla's most popular allies... and enemies, one which the sequel's director is teasing.

Michael Dougherty tweeted an image of a weather radar focusing on an enormous blob over the eastern United States. Going based on the header - labeled "Monster Zero" - the radar is actually tracking King Ghidorah. The radar most likely belongs to Monarch, the crypto-zoological agency tasked with investigating the activities of monsters like Godzilla and Kong.

Godzilla fans will recall that the name in the header is part of an alternate title of the fan-favorite 1965 film, Godzilla vs. Monster Zero. Better known by the title Invasion of the Astro-Monster, the film sends Godzilla and Rodan into outer space to battle King Ghidorah, who an alien species on Planet X had dubbed "Monster Zero." Judging by the image, it appears that "Monster Zero" may also be the name given to King Ghidorah in the upcoming film, at least until the characters learn his true name.

So far, what audiences know about the movie's version of King Ghidorah is that the monster will be portrayed through motion capture by Jason Liles, the actor who played the giant gorilla, George, in Rampage. The other two heads will be portrayed by other actors. This use of motion capture will make it interesting to see how the three-headed monster is translated on the big screen.

According to actor O'Shea Jackson, Godzilla and King Ghidorah will face off in an unforgettably epic showdown for the final fight of the film, which suggests that Rodan and Mothra will somehow be sidelined while the two enemies clash. As King Ghidorah has traditionally been portrayed as one of Godzilla's toughest foes, fans are surely looking forward to seeing the two come to blows when the film hits theaters on its new release date in May 2019.
