Michael Dougherty, director of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, has revealed how Ghidorah ended up on ice. The latest Godzilla film concluded its theatrical run, and is available today for digital purchase. The physical home media release will be available later this month.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters was one of 2019's most anticipated movies. Although the film received lukewarm reviews from critics, many fans appreciated how Michael Dougherty handled the iconic monsters. Out of all these monsters, perhaps the most praised was Ghidorah. Fans loved how menacing and powerful the three-headed terror was portrayed. In the film, Ghidorah is freed from his icy captivity, and quickly causes mayhem for the characters. Ghidorah would remain the story's antagonist, even defeating Godzilla before Mothra sacrificed herself. Before all this, one question remained: What was Ghidorah doing frozen to begin with? Fans now have the answer.

Over on his Twitter, director Michael Dougherty answered a fan's question asking why Ghidorah was trapped in Antarctica before the events of Godzilla: King of the Monsters. According to the director, Ghidorah being trapped was the result of losing to Godzilla back then.

This answer shouldn't come as a surprise. As shown during the post-credits scene of Kong: Skull Island, the rivalry between Godzilla and Ghidorah dates back many years. As the MonsterVerse has revealed, Godzilla has been around for a long time, and Ghidorah at some point arrived from outer space. The two titans fought, and Godzilla emerged victorious in ancient Antarctica. Fans would surely appreciate a film exploring this early time period of the monsters, or perhaps a comic tie-in.

Knowing the backstory of Ghidorah's icy prison makes his film emergence all the more effective. In the movie, Godzilla is clearly distressed that Ghidorah has returned, remembering his presumably hard-fought battle from long ago. Likewise, probably the first thing Ghidorah remembers is losing to Godzilla, so the three-headed beast stops everything it's doing when Godzilla arrives. There is a ton of untapped backstory regarding the early titans, so hopefully if the MonsterVerse continues, fans will be given a peak into it. As for Ghidorah's future, the monster was seemingly finally destroyed by Godzilla. However, as the post-credits scene for Godzilla: King of the Monsters showed, one of Ghidorah's heads remains. It's not yet known what this means, but maybe it will come into play in Godzilla vs. Kong next year. Fans will have to wait and see.
