There are some monsters that are so powerful that even Godzilla has needed help to beat them. True to his fearsome reputation, the King of the Monsters has been dispatching kaiju after kaiju for decades. Over the years, numerous creatures have fallen in battle to him on the big screen.

Godzilla has prevailed in a long list of iconic showdowns, including the ones that took place in movies like Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, Godzilla vs. Biollante, and more. However, not every fight in the Godzilla franchise has been a one-on-one match. Occasionally, he's had to go up against multiple kaiju, such as the time he was forced to fight two MUTOs at once in 2014's Godzilla movie. Sometimes, these situations require Godzilla to have an ally of his own. Not only that, but there have also been instances where Godzilla had to team up with another monster just to defeat a single villain. Here's all ten times Godzilla needed help from a fellow kaiju to win a fight.

10 Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster

1964's Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster - the fourth installment in the Godzilla series - is remembered as the movie that steered the Japanese pop culture icon away from being a villain. After battling Anguirus in Godzilla Raids Again and Mothra in Godzilla vs. Mothra as an enemy of Japan in both films, the kaiju found himself in a much different situation when King Ghidorah began wreaking havoc on Earth. Mothra, determined to stop Ghidorah's attacks, interrupted a battle between Godzilla and Rodan in the hopes of recruiting them for the fight. Uninterested in saving the humans, Godzilla and Rodan refused to get involved.

Watching Mothra head off to fight Ghidorah by himself seemingly shamed the pair enough to make them change their minds. In Godzilla's first-ever team-up, he joined forces with Rodan and went up against Ghidorah in the final battle. With limited assistance from Mothra, they were able to beat Ghidorah and force the alien into a retreat.

9 Invasion of Astro-Monster

Godzilla vs. Monster Zero in outer space

Toho followed up Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster with a rematch between three of the movie's four kaiju. The duo of Godzilla and Rodan reunited in Invasion of Astro-Monster for another fight with King Ghidorah. Deceived by a group of aliens, the human characters sent Godzilla and Rodan to a faraway planet to defeat Ghidorah. Using teamwork, the two managed to defeat their target, only to be mind-controlled by the aliens afterward. After the humans freed them from the villains' influence, Godzilla and Rodan worked together to take down Ghidorah once more, with their battle culminating in all three plunging into the ocean. The movie's ending left the true winner open to speculation by not showing Godzilla or Rodan emerge from the water.

8 Destroy All Monsters

DESTROY ALL MONSTERS (1968)

For the third time in a row, Ghidorah had the odds stacked against him in Destroy All Monsters. But for this fight, Ghidorah was so heavily outnumbered that it was a hard to imagine a scenario where he could have realistically won. The movie's events gathered Godzilla, Minila, Rodan, Anguirus, Manda, Kumonga, Baragon, Gorosaurus, and Varan for the battle with the three-headed monster. But in the end, roughly only some of the monsters participated in the action as Baragon, Varan, and Manda weren't shown in the fight itself. Instead, most of the fighting was left to Godzilla, Rodan, Angurius, and King Kong Escapes' Gorosaurus, who relentlessly beat the villain to death.

7 Godzilla vs. Gigan

In comparison to Godzilla's last three fights with Ghidorah, Godzilla vs. Gigan was much more fair to Monster Zero. This time, Ghidorah was given an ally in the form of Gigan, a cyborg monster with hook-like hands. The introduction of Gigan allowed Toho to deliver a two-on-two battle between the villain duo and Godzilla and Anguirus. As the weak link of the two, Anguirus struggled to hold his own at times, which led to Godzilla receiving a bloody beatdown at the hands of Gigan. But in the end, Godzilla got his second wind, and with Angurius' help, the pair were able to drive off both Ghidorah and Gigan.

6 Godzilla vs. Megalon

In Godzilla vs. Megalon, Toho created a second villain pairing by introducing Megalon and teaming him with Gigan. Gigan and the subterranean, cockroach monster battled Jet Jaguar, a heroic robot that could somehow grow to the size of a kaiju. At the end of the movie, Jet Jaguar was forced to fight Gigan and Megalon all on his own, but was outmatched against both of them. Godzilla's arrival turned the tables and made it a fair fight. By working together, Godzilla and Jet Jaguar overpowered Megalon and Gigan and forced the two to escape.

5 Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla presented the King of the Monsters with one of his most difficult challenges yet when it debuted his mechanical counterpart. Mechagodzilla's laser cannons and missiles made him a force to be reckoned with and enabled him to seriously wound Godzilla in their first fight, which ended in a draw. Later, the human characters performed a ritual that awakened an ancient and mystical kaiju from his slumber. Known as King Caesar, the monster arose from his resting place and fought side-by-side with Godzilla against Mechagodzilla. Having realized that a loss was imminent, Mechagodzilla attempted to escape, but was destroyed by Godzilla in the process.

4 Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II

The Heisei era of Godzilla films included two movies where Godzilla had to accept help from another monster. The first was Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, though it was admittedly not a proper team-up. In the movie, both creatures fought Mechagodzilla in the interest of protecting Godzilla's egg (each for their own reasons). Due to a secret weapon developed by the humans, Mechagodzilla left Godzilla on the brink of death by piercing his hidden brain. Rodan lost as well, but performed one last before his death. He transferred what was left of his life essence to Godzilla, giving him a powerful new upgrade and the strength needed to defeat Mechagodzilla.

3 Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla

Toho pitted Godzilla against an even stronger adversary when it brought in SpaceGodzilla, an extraterrestrial being created by an incident where Godzilla's DNA was mutated by a black hole. The all-powerful kaiju kidnapped Godzilla's son and seemed almost unbeatable until Godzilla was aided by Mogeura, a robot created by the government for the purpose of fighting Godzilla. Thanks to Moguera's help, Godzilla was able to destroy the crystals that powered SpaceGodzilla and bring him down for good. But, their victory didn't come without a cost, as Mogeura didn't survive the battle.

2 Godzilla: King of the Monsters

By taking on Rodan in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Mothra prevented Godzilla from having to fight two Titans simultaneously. After pulling out a win, a dying Mothra stepped in to stop Ghidorah from finishing off Godzilla. In a move that was reminiscient of Rodan's sacrifice in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, Mothra gave up her remaining energy to recharge Godzilla, thus giving birth to his burning form. How important Mothra was to Godzilla's victory was on display when the Queen of the Titans' silhouette could be seen in the nuclear pulses Godzilla used to defeat Ghidorah with in King of the Monsters' ending.

1 Godzilla vs. Kong

Godzilla vs Kong Mechagodzilla Tail

Like his Toho counterpart in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, the MonsterVerse's Godzilla wound up in dire straits during his battle with Godzilla vs. Kong's Mechagodzilla. Seemingly exhausted by his fights with Kong and having to blast a hole through the Hollow Earth, Godzilla couldn't stand up to Mechagodzilla's blows, nor he could win a beam battle with the villain. Fortunately for the King of the Monsters, the Titan he had just defeated came to his rescue and used his atomic breath-charged axe to tear Mechagodzilla to pieces in the movie's final minutes.
