During Legendary Pictures' watch party for Godzilla: King of the Monsters, director Michael Dougherty revealed Mothra is over 10,000 years old. Recently, the studio began holding online watch parties for the MonsterVerse movies. Plenty of fun facts and tidbits have been revealed, including a Godzilla 2014 deleted scene featuring TOHO movies.

One of the creatures featured in Godzilla: King of the Monsters is Mothra. This gigantic moth is easily the most recognizable Japanese monster aside from Godzilla himself. The character made her debut in 1961, capturing audiences with her colorful look. She tangled with Godzilla in 1964's Mothra vs. Godzilla, one of the most respected entries in the franchise. Unlike Godzilla, who wavers from hero to antagonist in different continuities, Mothra's role and personality are consistent. She defends the Earth in every movie she's in, and is often portrayed as a goddess. Her role in Godzilla: King of the Monsters is no different. After the intro with Godzilla, she is actually the first monster to appear when she hatches from her egg.

Last night, Legendary held the final MonsterVerse online watch party, this time for Godzilla: King of the Monsters. As with Godzilla 2014 and Kong: Skull Island, the director of the film, Michael Dougherty, joined in to offer plenty of tidbits for fans to look over. One particularly interesting fun fact is the film's script made mention that Mothra's egg was over 10,000 years old.

In a followup Tweet, Dougherty said Mothra was expecting to see her twin priestesses upon hatching, not the armed men. These little tidbits are interesting to consider, as it furthers the narrative of the creatures being on the Earth for so many years. Interestingly, the priestesses do, in a way, appear in the movie in the form of the Chen sisters.

What's next for Mothra in the MonsterVerse? In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the character sacrificed herself so Godzilla could defeat Ghidorah. However, death is typically not the end of Mothra. Rebirth is a key theme for the character, and the film does hint at her potential return. One of the clippings in the end credits states an egg was found in Mothra's territory. This would be the perfect way for her to return. Plus, Dougherty stated during the watch party that she has "already laid her egg." Hopefully Mothra will illuminate the big screen again.
