According to new story details for Godzilla vs. Kong, the MonsterVerse hasn't been destroyed by the end of Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The fourth (and potentially final?) installment of Legendary's MonsterVerse will finally arrive next month and feature the showdown audiences have been waiting for. For the first time since 1962's King Kong vs. Godzilla, two of cinema's biggest monsters will go head to head. Both Kong and Godzilla have been established in previous MonsterVerse installments as the franchise built up to this moment, which comes about when an enraged Godzilla crosses paths with Kong while he's searching for his true home.
Godzilla vs. Kong will pick up five years after 2019's King of the Monsters, which altered the landscape of the MonsterVerse dramatically. Whereas previous movies focused on one Titan (either Kong or Godzilla), this installment introduced a slew of creatures, from King Ghidorah to Mothra. King of the Monsters culminated in a battle between Ghidorah and Godzilla, and in the end, it was Godzilla who stood triumphant. As a result, the remaining Titans bowed to him, and he cemented his place as the apex predator.
With Godzilla looming large in the MonsterVerse, one has to wonder if the world has descended into chaos. However, Collider's visit to the set of Godzilla vs. Kong has revealed the opposite to be true - mostly. While speaking to production designers Tom Hammock and Owen Paterson, it was revealed that the world hasn't become a post-apocalyptic wasteland since the rise of Godzilla. However, he has trampled some cities, and Godzilla vs. Kong is about getting him to stop that.
The first trailer for Godzilla vs. Kong revealed Gojira is acting abnormally, to the point of essentially being the movie's most prominent villain. However, as many have noted, it seems likely the Titan is being controlled somehow. Additional Godzilla vs. Kong details revealed the evil counterpart to Monarch, known as Apex. At first glance, this organization seems responsible for Godzilla's destructive tendencies, though surely more will be revealed in the movie itself.
Nevertheless, it's clear that while the MonsterVerse has changed slightly since King of the Monsters, it isn't totally destroyed. It'll be interesting to see how other things have been altered in the years after the previous installment, particularly when it comes to the public's response to the Titans. Godzilla vs. Kong will further the MonsterVerse's narrative and can potentially open the door for future movies. If it doesn't, however, it will at least go out with a bang.
