Vera Farmiga has revealed some tantalizing details about her character in the upcoming Monsterverse sequel Godzilla: King of the Monsters. According to the actress, she may be able to form a special link with the city-smashing creatures and therefore possibly play a crucial part in the fate of the planet. Given that much of the plot for the Michael Dougherty film has remained top-secret until now, it's an interesting hint as to which direction the movie may go.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters follows on directly from the events shown in 2014's Godzilla. Having already protected the Earth from two destructive MUTOs that were intent on mating and overrunning the ecosystem, the heroic Kaiju will be seen fighting against a collective of other monsters rising to confront him. These will include classic opponents like King Ghidorah and Mothra. Returning from the first film will be Monarch scientists Dr. Ishiro Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) and Dr. Vivienne Graham (Sally Hawkins). One of the new humans set to be caught up in the colossal battles will be Dr. Emma Russell, who is played by Farmiga. Up until now, little was known about the new cast members and how they would interact with their monstrous co-stars.

However, when speaking to Metro recently, Farmiga gave a few intriguing nuggets of information about her character, and what her skills are:

“I play a paleobiologist… She has figured out a way to communicate with the creatures and potentially control them using their bioacoustics on a sonar level. So she is like a DJ for the monsters.”

While the general definition for a paleobiologist (in very basic terms) is someone who combines fossil studies with living biology, the reference to sonar communication and potential control is the most eye-catching element in Farmiga's words. Does this mean that she is able to directly converse with Godzilla or some of the other Kaiju, and somehow direct their actions? It could be an homage to certain elements of the original Japanese films like Miki Saegusa, who was a recurring character who communicated with classic Kaiju in several films, such as Godzilla vs. Biollante in 1989.

At any rate, it seems as if Emma Russell will be an important part of the storyline and a possible cause for some of the battles. It doesn't sound like she will be limited to the sidelines like the Monarch scientists in the previous film. The character is also notable for being the mother to Madison Russell, who is being played by Millie Bobby Brown, with Kyle Chandler as her father Mark Russell.

Farmiga adds that she wasn't drawn to the movie for the spectacle or the monsters, but that she considers it to be "a film about saving the environment." She also mentions that Dougherty is a “very careful” director and has performed countless takes to get the scenes right, adding that she is still working with him on some minor additional photography. While plenty of the sequel's plot still remains as mysterious as ever, there should be more major revelations expected when the film showcases at SDCC 2018. Hopefully Godzilla: King of the Monsters will live up to expectations and the legacy when it is released in May 2019.
