Godzilla: King of the Monsters contains small references that lead to the big monster showdown in Godzilla vs. Kong, says director Michael Dougherty. After Kong was set-up in 2017's hit Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla gets his turn to take center stage in the next MonsterVerse film, due out in theaters next summer. As teased during the post-credits stinger of Skull Island, King of the Monsters will also include appearances from famous kaiju Rodan, King Ghidorah, and Mothra.

Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown heads up the human cast of King of the Monsters, alongside Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Sally Hawkins, Thomas Middleditch, and Ziyi Zhang. In a recent interview, Farmiga teased an interesting development upcoming in the new movie, indicating that her character has worked out how to communicate with the kaiju and potentially control them. Needless to say, such skills add a novel twist to the action.

As more details about King of the Monsters begin to trickle out, director Michael Dougherty has chimed in by offering a clue about how the movie will tease the planned monster showdown in Godzilla vs. Kong. Speaking to EW, Dougherty said there won't be any major Kong set-up but the movie will definitely point toward the return of the big gorilla in the next MonsterVerse entry. Dougherty said: “It’s not like we’re bending over backwards to introduce Kong, but there’s definitely some bread crumbs."

Besides teasing the movie's connections to Godzilla vs. Kong, Dougherty's interview also gives new information about Godzilla's powers, including the character's iconic atomic breath. Plus, Dougherty recently hinted at how King Ghidorah arrives on the scene, coming into the East Coast in a hurricane and being picked up by Monarch's radar. King of the Monsters reportedly climaxes with a battle between Godzilla and Ghidorah, a fight Godzilla presumably survives, as Godzilla vs. Kong is already set to go before cameras with Adam Wingard as director.

With all the new updates about King of the Monsters, what powers the monster will have and what capabilities the human characters may bring to the table, the movie is looking more and more intriguing, as well as the proper next step in expanding the MonsterVerse. Of course, the main event the whole shared universe points to is the face-off between mighty Godzilla and the super-sized Kong introduced in Skull Island. Fans may get even more clues to chew on, and perhaps some footage, when Godzilla: King of the Monsters makes an appearance at SDCC later this month.
