Gearbox's Godfall is a third-person melee game developed by Counterplay Games and is set to release for the PlayStation 5 and PC. In Godfall, players have the opportunity to assume the role of a heavily armored warrior with animalistic abilities and engage in intense combat with other creatures.

Godfall was originally announced at The Game Awards in December 2019, and the following month a six-second video clip leaked on both Reddit and Twitter appearing to show samples of the title’s gameplay. Since then, players have been eagerly anticipating official information about Godfall's combat, as well as a release date for the game.

An official trailer was finally released during Sony’s Future of Gaming PS5 reveal event, which took place on June 11th. Godfall's gameplay and story is likely to be a hit with fans of the fantasy genre for its imaginative setting, which incorporates various magical and fantastical elements. The game's trailer has not only ramped up excitement over Godfall but has also revealed a little bit more about the title's story and gameplay.

Godfall's gameplay gives players various opportunities for customization, particularly in terms of their character’s aesthetic. Players will be able to unlock new armor after completing battles, and not only will this improve their overall look, but different sets of armor will have various advantages. Players can also choose different weapon classes in Godfall along with 12 uniquely-abled Valorplates. This forces players to not only be strategic in combat but also when choosing their desired abilities and weapons.

"Imagine a co-op looter-shooter experience like Borderlands," Godfall creative director Keith Lee told Games Radar in January. But instead, it's a co-op looter-slasher experience set in a more serious and brand-new fantasy world filled with heroic knights and ancient magic." Lee explained that Godfall’s universe is separated into five different realms dependent on the elements – Air, Earth, Fire, Spirit and Water. But as an apocalypse draws near, the realms have begun to converge and bleed together. The game’s protagonist is one of the final remaining members of the Knights Order, all of whom are preparing for battle to save their realms.

The main focus in Godfall’s combat is the melee action. Lee explained, "[The point is to] gear up with close-range melee weapons to vanquish foes and team up with friends to hunt for awesome powerful loot.” Lee also praised the game’s counter-play – enemies will feature the ability to mutate and switch up their attack patterns. While the game can be played in single-player mode, it has been specifically designed for an enhanced gameplay experience in co-op mode. A crucial part of creating a winning strategy in Godfall's gameplay will be about teaming up with allies to defeat foes in addition to refining one’s melee combat skills and looting abilities.

Godfall's Release Date

It’s been confirmed that Godfall will release in late 2020, right in time for the holidays. The game does not appear to be backwards compatible with older-gen consoles, and upon Godfall's release it will be console exclusive to the PS5. Players can expect a separate PC version through Epic Games Store.

Based on the trailers alone, it’s clear that the graphics in Godfall will be stunning. The game bodes a detailed and expansive world, realistic lighting, and smooth gameplay. The improved hardware on the next-gen PlayStation promises an excellent gameplay experience once Godfall's release date hits. Lee elaborated on this to Games Radar, explaining, "The exceptionally powerful SSD on the PlayStation 5 offers a new level of detail for each individual object as well as seamless loading of our expansive world.” The PS5’s new DualShock controller will also enhance the gaming experience as its “‘adaptive triggers' and haptic feedback will make moment-to-moment combat feel exhilarating and visceral,” Lee added.

Godfall is a new title being developed for the PlayStation 5 and PC, and given how impressive its most recent trailer was fans are lucky they have only a few months to wait before its release.
