Amazon Prime Video is eyeing a live-action adaptation of Sony's hit God of War video game series. Sony launched the God of War video game franchise in 2005, and it wasn't too long afterward that Hollywood took interest in the property. Despite the poor track record video game adaptations have, Universal originally tried to make a movie. The development of the God of War movie included hiring Pacific Rim's writers in 2012. However, the studio struggled to crack the story and led to sources saying that no God of War movies or shows were in development as of summer 2021.

The story of God of War follows Kratos, a Spartan warrior based on Greek mythology who becomes the "God of War." The action-adventure video games have become Sony's flagship franchise for the Playstation consoles over the last 17 years. There have been five entries in the main God of War franchise to this point, with the highly anticipated sixth entry, God of War Rangarök, scheduled to release sometime in 2022. As the games continue to be incredibly popular, it now appears that even more God of War content is on the way.

According to a report from Deadline, Amazon Prime Video is eyeing a live-action TV series based on God of War. Amazon and Sony are still negotiating the terms of the series, so the series is not officially happening yet. The God of War TV show idea comes from The Expanse creators Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, as well as The Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins. There are currently no cast members attached or release window set for Amazon's God of War TV show.

God Of War Ragnarok What To Know Kratos

If Prime Video does adapt God of War, it will be the latest high-profile video game to get a TV adaptation. Amazon is already familiar with this territory as it is moving forward with plans for a Fallout series starring Walton Goggins and is also developing a Mass Effect TV show. The movement on a God of War adaptation takes another major video game franchise off the table as streaming services continue to mine these properties for adaptations.

The potential for a live-action God of War series is quite exciting. The video games have a massive following and are widely considered to be some of the best games Sony has ever produced. It also comes at a time when some other major video games are becoming TV shows. With Paramount+'s Halo show, HBO's The Last of Us, and Netflix's Resident Evil series also in the works (as well as new video game movie franchises like Uncharted), God of War's rich mythology and great characters could help it stand out as video game adaptations become more common.
