With the recent news that God of War Ragnarok will be that last of the franchise's Norse saga, many fans have speculated which mythology the series may explore next, with many believing it to be Egyptian. After God of War 3 concluded Kratos' Greek journey, 2018's God of War saw the introduction of a brand new Norse setting. While fairly overused in many forms of media, God of War crafted a unique Norse setting that although differed greatly from the source material, told the story of the Pantheon fairly accurately.

With God of War Ragnarok ending the Norse saga, Santa Monica Studio may decide to throw Kratos and Atreus into a more underused pantheon, such as Egyptian mythology. The developers initially had plans for 2018's installment of the franchise to be set in Egypt, but had decided against it, ending up with the Norse setting seen today. Santa Monica Studio even revealed some concept art that shows what a God of War set in Egypt could look like. As Ragnarok brings upon the brutal destruction of the Norse pantheon, it seems likely that the godly father and son duo may see themselves in the desert oases of Egypt in the next game.

Egyptian mythology continues to be fairly underused in most forms of media, especially in video games. The only recent games that have really come close to an Egyptian mythological setting have been Assassin's Creed: Origins and Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris. Both of these also don't really have actual Egyptian gods playing a role as characters in the story but delve more into the actual practices and stories of the ancient religion. God of War could change that with its next installment since the developers at Santa Monica Studio have stated that they want God of War to explore Egyptian or Mayan mythology next. This could work great in the next game, showcasing powerful gods like Ra or Ankh in its story and having Kratos or Atreus face them in battle.

How God of War's Story Could Move Into Egyptian Mythology

God of War concept art imagines Kratos in Egypt

There are a variety of reasons as to why Kratos and Atreus may venture out to the sandy dunes and pyramids of Egypt, and it all goes back to a mural from 2018's God of War. Throughout the story of God of War, Kratos and Atreus encounter quite a few murals depicting various events that occur in Norse mythology. One of these murals contains the eye of Ra, a symbol of war and the God of the Sun. These murals also contain symbols from other lands like Japan and Greece, which could also hint at a Japanese setting at some point in the future. The Norse god of War, Tyr, is at the center point of this mural, so it's safe to assume that he will be related to Kratos and Atreus's travels in the future since Tyr will be a major character in Ragnarok

With God of War Ragnarok right around the corner, it's exciting to wonder how things will play out for everyone's favorite Spartan and his son. Ragnarok will be the end of the Norse saga of the series and based on details from the 2018 game, it seems likely that Kratos and Atreus will continue their journey in either Egypt or Japan. Regardless of the setting, it will be exciting to see where the story goes next and how things will unfold in God of War Ragnarok.
