While the first time playing through God of War Ragnarok can be a magical experience, the mythic sequel is actually even better the second time. Kratos and Atreus' latest adventure takes them across the Nine Realms of Norse mythology as they fight to protect each other and forge their own futures. God of War Ragnarok has an infamously clever twist towards the end of its story, and this dramatic reveal makes replaying the game much more interesting.

The plot of the series' 2018 entry is straightforward on the surface, but God of War's Atreus twist and the revelations about Kratos' wife Faye recontextualize much of the game's story. For example, the reveal that Faye was a Giant gives entirely new meaning to the confrontation between Kratos and Baldur early in the game. While first-time players may assume that Baldur is discussing Kratos' past as a Greek god, a second playthrough makes it clear that the Norse deity is actually talking about the extinct Jotnar. The idea that Faye foretold the entire plot of God of War also dramatically changes the context surrounding the game's journey.

God Of War Ragnarök Pulls Off A Flawless Twist With Tyr

God of War 2018's Loki twist is easily matched by its sequel when it's revealed that God of War Ragnarok's Tyr is actually Odin in disguise. This twist is a massive turning point in the plot, with Odin murdering Brok when the dwarven blacksmith realizes that something is off about the timid Norse God of War. Devastated by the death of Brok and their manipulation at the hands of Odin, Kratos and Atreus vow to kill the All-Father by triggering the apocalyptic event Ragnarok. The revelation that Tyr has been Odin the entire time is incredibly shocking the first time, but replaying God of War Ragnarok unveils numerous clues clearly hinting at the surprising twist.

Odin Is Hiding In God Of War Ragnarök

During a second playthrough players can find many early signs that Odin is hiding in God of War Ragnarok. Much of Tyr's dialogue actually furthers Odin's agenda by supporting peace with Asgard and sowing the divide between Kratos and Atreus. Tyr also refers to Freya as "Frigg," a pet name used by the All-Father for his ex-wife, and is shocked that Groa lied to Odin about Ragnarok. Tyr calls a spear a walking stick when Atreus offers it to him, too, which references the spear Gungnir that doubles as Odin's walking stick. Tyr also claims a dark broom closet as his room, which helps Odin teleport in and out of Sindri's house undetected.

The reveal that Tyr has been Odin the entire time is very shocking to first-time players, but a second playthrough of the complete God of War Ragnarok story makes the twist seem incredibly obvious. Many of the confrontations between Kratos and Atreus are triggered by comments from Tyr, and the Norse God of War acts very suspicious during several key moments. The God of War Ragnarok Tyr twist is executed masterfully, and it adds replayabilty by letting players experience the sequel's story again from a whole new perspective.
