The next God of War game, God of War Ragnarok, was officially announced today during a PlayStation 5 Showcase. The showcase revealed a lot of exciting new titles for the next-gen console, including Final Fantasy XVI and, unexpectedly enough, a new Five Nights At Freddy's game. It also finally announced the price point of the new console, something fans have been eagerly awaiting for a long time.

Fans have also been waiting a while for God of War news. The most recent game in the long-running action series released in 2018 to rave reviews. It completely re-envisioned the franchise, turning a brutal splatterfest into a somber trek through Norse mythology. The combat remained intense and bloody, but it was paired with a surprisingly thoughtful storyline about iconic protagonist Kratos and his young son Atreus. The storyline and voice acting were acclaimed almost as much as the tight, engaging combat, and the game was an instant hit. God of War got Game of the Year nods from numerous publications and now stands as the bestselling game in the series, so it's understandable that fans would be eager for more.

And now it seems they're getting it. Immediately after Sony CEO Jim Ryan appeared to confirm the $499 pricetag for the PlayStation 5 during today's showcase, the screen went dark, only to be taken up moments later by the circular serpent fans can recognize from the God of War logo. At the same time, Kratos's familiar voice could be heard, telling viewers that "the time draws near; you must prepare yourself." The phrase "Ragnarok is coming" then appeared on the screen. The new project is set to release in 2021. Check out the teaser below, courtesy of IGN.

The 2018 blockbuster certainly set the stage for a sequel like this, and hinted that the infamous Thor would be arriving to take part in the legendary Norse apocalypse. Many fans were beginning to despair that they'd see any official news for a while, though, especially when creative director Cory Barlog shot down sequel rumors on Twitter back in July. This new teaser certainly doesn't give people a lot to go on, but it's definitely more than some folks might have expected after such dismissal.

Sony clearly understands how much people love God of War. The iconic action game got a place of honor as the final announcement to close out the Playstation 5 announcement with a bang. After such a scant announcement, fans will likely have to wait a while before they get any substantial news about the new game. But if God of War Ragnarok is even half as good as its predecessor, players should expect something truly special.
