The latest snippet of God of War Ragnarök gameplay footage confirms that Kratos and Atreus will explore all Nine Realms of Asgard in their latest adventure. 2018’s God of War reboot traded the marble cities of Mount Olympus from the previous God of War trilogy with the icy landscapes of ancient Norse mythology, as Kratos chose to abandon his old path of anger and vengeance in favor of a quiet life with his son Atreus.

This setting brought new environments for players to explore in God of War (2018), as Kratos and Atreus embarked on a journey to fulfill the dying wish of Kratos' late wife to have her ashes spread across the highest peak in Jotunheim. On this journey, father and son traveled across six of God of War (2018)’s Norse realms of Asgard, from the snowy forests of Midgard and icy fields of Alfheim to the dark underworld of Helheim and the toxic mist of Niflheim. While this provided a rich look at the world of Nordic mythology and allowed Kratos and Atreus to meet many interesting and memorable characters, several areas of the Nine Realms were left to players’ imaginations due to the tyrannical Odin cutting off access to certain areas and the urgency of the main quest at hand.

God of War Ragnarök won’t be as restricted, as a newly released gameplay trailer posted to the official Game Informer YouTube channel (via VGC) revealed that all Nine Realms will be explored in Kratos' latest adventure. God of War Ragnarök director Eric Williams told Game Informer that not only will all the realms be accessible, but the ones previously featured in God of War (2018) will feature new locations. Some examples of the new areas players will see in God of War Ragnarök are Vanaheim, Svartalfheim, and Asgard, with the recently released Ragnarök gameplay footage showing Kratos and Atreus roaming Svartalfheim - the land of the dwarves. This realm embodies the ingenuity of the Dwarven race, with impressive technical marvels like mine pits, artificial water channels, and large cities that contain complex environmental puzzles for players to navigate.

God of War Ragnarök Will Build On Its Predecessor

New realms won’t be the only way that God of War Ragnarök will expand on the foundation of the previous game, as Kratos and Atreus will encounter several figures and creatures from Nordic folklore on their quest to uncover the truth behind the prophecy of the three-year-long Fimbulwinter and Ragnarök, the fabled end of the world. While some of these new characters and monsters may help the pair, such as the giant Angrboda and the potential wolf-like ally Fenrir, others like God of War Ragnarök’s recently-leaked version of Odin and the vengeful Freya have set out to destroy them.

There will be no shortage of sights to be seen and new environments to be navigated in God of War Ragnarök, as it has been confirmed that Kratos and Atreus will journey through all Nine Realms in the final chapter of their Nordic adventure. Players will get to see much more of these beautiful and dangerous realms when God of War Ragnarök finally launches on both PlayStation consoles on November 9.
